SUP Surf Volume and Width - how much is too much?

sp25 8’11" 150l [gf=1.52]
sp25 9’5" 177l [gf=1.79]
sp24 9’7” 173l  [gf=1.74]
gf= guild factor (volume of board in L/ weight of rider in kg)

https://www.blueplanetsurf.com/blogs/news/sup-board-volume-recommendation-chart/

beginner [gf = 2.2-3]
novice/int in rough conditions [gf= 1.8- 2.2]
adv surfing [gf = 1.3-1.8]
expert surfing/pro [gf = 1.1-1.3]

My two cents is Rick's board test agrees with "SUP Board Volume Recommendation".  A 99kg rider may be comfortable a range 49L for an advanced surfer, 39L of range for an intermediate surfer, and 29L of range for an expert (or more for a rider who rides negative volume).

In my experience where you start feeling volume distribution is in rough conditions when water & wind is pushing on the board.  In offshore wind you can feel the width of wider boards.  Shorter riders can get by with less width imo.

Stupid question - Does the weight for guild factor include the wetsuit ?

If so,  then my winter GF = 1.48

and my summer GF = 1.62

I don't really notice a flotation difference between the seasons.  It would seem to matter more if I was on a smaller board.  Biggest seasonal difference for me is changing from no gloves - gloves - mittens.

I'm on a 8'6, 29"w, 125L and weigh 170lb in trunks.

Weight is weight doesn't matter if it's boardies or a 7mm suit.

I wouldn't get too caught up in GF once you are a competent surfer. My GF ranges from 1.3-1.4 depending on my boards. However, board shape has a dramatic impact on my enjoyment of the ride at the exact same GF.

It is unfortunate that most brands don’t give you surface area. I find it to be a very useful metric when comparing boards, especially if they very different shapes. Firewire used to have an app that listed it for all their models in all sizes and it really helped when trying to figure out what board size would work for you. Gong is the only sup company that I know of that publishes this information currently.
