2023 New Wings Thread
« on: December 20, 2022, 01:59:28 PM »
Seems a good time to start a new thread! I watched as much of the content I could find coming out of AWSI and the main thing that caught my eye were the new materials coming into wings.

Props to Mackite for pulling this together, which I found to be a great little summary of the state of play (although didn't cover everything):

Also from Mackite was this on light wind wings, which I found interesting:

I'm not in the market for wings at the moment. The Takuma RSs are doing it for me! Still looking forward to seeing what gets released this year though...

They might need to redo these videos when the actual 2023s from everyone are released.

Coming early in 2023 is Fone, Reedin, and Cabrinha just to name a few.

These videos are already dated. As of this year's AWSI Ocean Rodeo already announced other members of Aluula family of fabrics.

They were already at around 70GSM leading edge and strut material, almost as stiff as the Aluula Gold but much easier to handle and work with.

Their new 5M wing is suppose to be around 2LB! stiffer and more durable than anything on the market with
a canopy material that puts everything else to shame. I'm sure it will come with a steep price tag but it might be worth it for supposedly tripling the life span of every wing I own now.
in progress...

Yup, agree with all of that! Wondering if the RSs will last long enough to build up the 'investmemt' fund for the next gen highly durable wings...

Nice videos that remind me of the ones skiessentials puts out. Have done some back to back testing of the North Mode with the Duo Dlabs. Really like the Mode. Has a deeper draft and less dihedral than the Dlab. Less spontaneous power shut off than the Dlab. Feels more like a sail than a wing but left with the question of "what would this wing be like in Aluula?" as it is noticeably heavier than the Dlab with a duller, less sporty and crispy feel than the Dlab.

Very interesting comment DNSKI...

I'VE also been really keen to get my hands on a MODE but not sure a 5.5 could replace my light and crispy GLIDE 6mt if and when it ever dies... Friends in puerto rico Love the MODE but they are always blessed with solid wind and waves so every day is blissful for them no matter what! Lol

Yeah.. It's great to be on the cutting edge of material development IF YOU'RE SPONSORED but paying 2 grand for a glorified pool toy and HOPING the new fibers are going to hold up is really an expensive trip to the casino when you're just a working stiff.
OH well.. I guess retirement will be forever out of reach.

Interesting how the North fabric is supposed to a lot  lighter... What did they say 105 grams/meter?
Yet their 8m light wind wing is said to be heavier than the Dacron Fone 8m CWC.

I think the new lighter North material is only used for the Mode and not its other wings like its Nova and light wind wings -- not positive, maybe someone else can confirm one way or the other.   :)

I'm not sure what the lead time is like for these new wings, but I'm seeing some awesome looking prototypes with new fabrics. We're going to see thinner, stiffer leading edges and struts, and lighter canopy material that doesn't bag out. I doubt it will be Dacron, my new-ish 7m is already feeling bagged.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

So, what type of handles do these new prototypes have --  booms, hard handles or soft handles?  From w1hat I've seen the hard handles seem to be taking over for new wings -- maybe I'll be proven wrong.

The manufactures had better be very careful with new materials -- push the price up a little too much and there will be resistance -- there's a fine balancing act for sure.  If they can extend the longevity and wind range of a wing then maybe the extra price can be justified.

Especially with the Cabrinha deal at Mackite with 3 wings for $1000. That can't be beat. Who cares if it's 1 year old at that point.

Cabrinha, bolt on hard handles
Armie, bolt on hard handles…so maybe Ozone goes hard handles too. I think they use the same designer.

I’m thinking F-one might be the only soft handles in 2023. Maybe Naish stays soft?

At this point in time I should not be forced to buy several wings just to be able to match the style of handles I want to use for a specific session. I have a good use case for each type of handles and I would like to be able to exercise that option on the same wing.

Companies that offers customers this freedom should be celebrated imo. Ocean Rodeo or the new comer Tyron wing from Kauper comes to mind I think there are couple more.
