Fin recs!!
« on: November 29, 2022, 09:26:46 AM »
I have an 8"6 Bishop Alpha. Currently has super flexi plastic fins in a quad. I like the quad and havent slipped off the face etc...

I'm looking for some more speed catching waves and maybe a little more on the face.

Mushy knee to waist high sometimes head high in Charleston,SC.

I'm 190lb and 5"10

My current fins seem fine truthfully but I feel like I should put some good ones on. Was thinking Machado quads or Future Controller Quads. Don't think I want super stiff

My buddy just upgraded some plastic fins on his quad to get better performance.
The first thing I would do is figure out what size fins you have now.  With that figure out what surface area they are.  Then start looking at fins and compare the surface area.  If you are happy with the hold you have now, probably donít want to go smaller in surface area.
Not recommending a particular set as I am not familiar with the shape of your board.  If I am not stoked on a board, with an open mind I keep trying different fin setups looking for the magic combo.
For Futures, I have been using 3 different sets.  If your board has a wide tail or fish shape, the Controllers are good.  This is my go to fin for L41 boards.  The controllers are a split keel design so like to be ridden like a fish.  If the board is a blown up shortboard shape, the Gerry Lopez GL2 quads are good.  I like the hold these have on steep waves.  I like this fin on the Jimmy Lewis SuperFrank.  For something different Keel fins are worth a try, i.e. Rasta.  I like this fin on the Jimmy Lewis WorldWide & L41 S5.  These fins are a nice balance of speed with just enough hold.

p.s. The board you have now might be easier in the the summer.  The weight of winter gear makes boards feel a good 5L+ smaller, which is more tiring for the legs & ankles and makes a board feel less stable.  Not knowing the shape of your board, but an 8'6" x 30" x 4.25" could be as small as 117L (i.e PSH Wide Ripper) [guild factor = 1.3].
p.p.s.  L41 pricing can be found here:

Thanks for the advice. Good point on measuring the total area
 I was just measuring height.

My board is the bishop alpha. Not sure what you'd call the shape. Heres the link https://charlestonsupsafaris.com/bishop-boards/

Actually had a pretty fun clean day last week. Waist to chest high and clean. Put the 2+1 on and felt much better. Turns were smooth down the line. Didn't feel slower than the quad and the center fin I think helped my tracking while catching. Gonna look for some nice thrusters about same size since I like the hold. And then a nice fast center.

Needessentials is having a holiday sale (i.e. fins).  I have been really impressed with their stuff.

I have an 8'10" board with fcs boxes that I am still searching for the magic combo (want more speed).  Tried 2+1 and quads.  Will explore a single fin next.
This write up is interesting:

Quobba's are the ONLY fins I use anymore.... they have changed the game!
They are like upgrading to a new, better board!
https://quobbafins.com/

I prefer the Mixed Thruster set
large side
medium center

they don't have Quads yet... just buy mixed thrusters and extra medium center fin.
