Axis PNG 1300 for light wind?
« on: November 22, 2022, 03:27:47 AM »
I'm looking for the ultimate Axis light wind foil for wind in the 6 to 10 mph range. Is anyone out there using the PNG 1300 for wing foiling?

I've been foiling some incredibly light wind with the BSC 1060 and 7m CWC which gets me wondering if another foil like the 1300 might be even better.

Dominic Hoskyns is getting me stoked with his reviews and I'm wondering if others are having the same experience or know of any drawbacks the 1300 might have. Also, what is the top end of its wind range? At what wind speeds does it start to become less usable?

The 1300 is a great light wind foil, more low end than the 1060 with great glide. I do recommend it on a high modulus mast. It's not going to win any races for the size of it so I wouldn't take it out in high winds unless you want to use a 2.5 meter and have endless glides. I've also really like it for sup foiling, you can carve with a wing tip out of the water and keep riding. Putting the progressive 475 on it also helps with the turning and lets it fly at nice speed and pump easily.

I have been winging on the 1300 and 375p in 5-6mph with a kalama 7'6" displacement hull board. If you really want to unlock the lightest of wind, the long skinny, light board is the key. I way able to butt start it too!

I definitely want that type of board at some point. What is the width and volume of your 7'6?

The Kalama E3 boards look great but I have no idea what size to get. They are also very expensive so I'm taking my time. I'm thinking maybe the 5'2 x 28" 105L or 6'1 x 26" 115L.

I'm hoping the industry follows the long skinny displacement shape idea. The short/low volume trend is not for me. I want to get up on foil as easily as possible and be able to sail home if the wind drops.

probably less expensive to build one. There are a bunch of new downwind boards hitting the market lately. I imagine that if you wait 6 months, there will be a glut of second hand ones on craigslist. Mine is 7'6"x 20"x 4 3/4" 105L. It has breathed new excitement into shitty winter wind winging. I have also been trying to paddle it up in flatwater, which has been really fun and I almost have it on foil. If its just going to be for winging, it could probably be a little shorter like 6'5". The skinnier the better(to a point). The big span of the 1300 gives it ample lateral stability. If you go too wide like 26" you will probably lose some benefit of the fast hull.  It really doesn't feel like a long board when on foil because a lot of it is the skinny tail behind me. The 1300 feels like a good pairing. I am going to try using a small hand wing next time even if its light wind just to see what I can get away with.  It has been so fun having a new class of toy to play with.

I have the 1150/460-390-500 and the 1099/375. Bought the 1300 maybe a month ago and paired it with the 375 (red shirt fuselage) and it is my current favorite set up. Winds using an 8 m to 2.8 m it is solid. That said, it is about surfing waves and cruising. Stayed up on foil for over an hour 22 minutes. The 1300 is my new go to. ⚡️⚡️⚡️
My board is the Kalama E3 6’4” x 23”. Solid!! Ocean sup foil and and wing.

I'm sold on the 1300 for light wind and long glide.

The Kalama E3 design concept is just what I'm looking for. I don't understand why all the companies aren't going in this direction. Maybe that is just around the corner.

I mainly flatwater wing foil with occasional small swell riding. I'm too old for long ocean downwinders so the E3 wing/SUP boards are probably more suited for what I'm doing. I want a board that gets up on foil as easily as possible.

The E3 downwind boards look intriguing though. I'd love to demo one just to see if I might be missing anything. I don't know if I could go less than 26" wide. I'm sure I could ride the narrower boards but I also want wing foiling to be easy.

Badger, I think the industry is following the pros for now who are able to ride really short.

I myself now love my 23x4'6" board for good conditions. The turning is really fun and responsive.

But I do agree that for a lot of folks, especially flat water cruising like you're describing they would be really fun. For that use and if you're not DW-ing I'll bet you could go shorter. Those will show up used I'll bet since open water people are going longer now. Steamroller has a 7'6" on the way from his shaper as we speak!!

I'm going to have to give the 1300 another go. I didn't like all the sudden stalls but I probably just need to spend more time with it. I've seen Alika do ballet with his, which is why I got one in the first place. Given that he's the same size as me--maybe a bit bigger--that's like watching a bear dance Swan Lake.

Wow, looks like you did 50 or more jibes. What was the wind speed and what size wing?

I started counting and lost track after 50 jibes. 😁 I had this personal goal of being on foil for over an hour and previously to the last run fell at 58 minutes and 59 minutes 😂.

I used the Kalama E3 6’4” x 23” (love this board), 90 cm aluminum mast, short red fuselage, and 1300/375.

Wing- F one 6 m CWC (with harness). Wind was 12-16 mphs.

Did you say somewhere that this board was 6 lbs?  Is that correct ??

Oops. I see it now. Your session was with F'one 6m CwC. Just to clarify. Please confirm that the hour 22 was SUP foil without a handwing, right? That is awesome!!
Thanks,
