Go Foil RS1150 Rear Stab Options
« on: September 08, 2022, 07:01:10 AM »
Hi All,
I am running the RS1150 with the FTL 20” and it works great, no complaints. I have a Naish s25 75lt board and I have to run my mast all the way back in the tracks and my front foot strap all the way in the front holes. I want to move my front straps back farther to make it more comfortable to use my back strap, which is all the way forward too. I am thinking that either a FTS 14” or FTS 12” would allow me to move the front strap back more. Anyone out there using the RS1150 with either the FTS 14 or 12? Is the lift reduced using a smaller Stab?

YES, you need more gear ;D !!

Interesting that you also have the mast all the way back and the front straps all the way forward (me too), though I'm always using the 1150 with the 14.5 ft-L. In fact I'm always amazed how far forward my rear foot appears to be, nowhere near any of the footstrap holes. That would be completely unnatural, of course every board is going to be different. I just picked up the 20 ft-L but never considered using it with the 1150, just used it with a GL240 the other day in light conditions, it's huge.

You're not gonna get going as quickly with the 14.5 but suspect you may be able to move aft a hair with it.
I will have to try your combo at some point

FTL 20 and rs1150 work great. I usually use it from 13 knots to 25-30 knots, wind waves from 1 to head high. Control, speed, all really good.

I want to start jumping more and putting my back foot in the rear strap, everything feels really unstable because I have to put all my weight on my front foot. If a 14 or 12 FTL would produce less lift I could move the front straps back, which would balance the weight a bit more.

Even going down to FTL 14 will make a huge difference. It will reduce the lift
and will give the foil completely different feel. Might take a session to get used to
but the gain in glide and speed is noticeable.

Burchas, do you use any of the FT-S tails? I had the 14.5 short for a while but ultimately sold it and kept the L. The L already turns on a dime for me :D

as above...I expect you will get a "holy s**t" reaction when you put on the 14...will feel like you added a 5th gear and race tires.   FTS even moreso.

And vice versa, using the 20 with the 1150 is also kinda wow, but different reasons: lift, stability, pumpability....feels pretty cool. (this is a new one for me, just got my 20 a few sessions ago...using it for lighter wind, more lift needed situations)

Is that 12 just to small for the 1150. Would the 1150 over power the 12. Seems that the 14 FTS may be the best option.

no such thing as overpowering a tail in my opinion.  The smaller the tail, the more maneuverable and the better the glide.  You're giving up pumping capability and you're making the setup more twitchy (which can be good depending on what you want).  But it isn't an "overpowering" type of thing.  Really more of tradeoffs you are making

If you want to get your feet farther back, you might try moving the foil as far forward as possible and still have reasonably equal foot pressure if you haven't already done it.

There's just no way a random boards footstrap inserts are going to work with every foil combination. Sometimes the boxes just don't have the adjustment range to make it all come together. On this 4'9 Appleslice I'm using, I couldn't ever use the rear footstrap inserts. They're down the center of the board and my feet are fairly offset side to side. That back foot is all the way over on the leeward rail most of the time.

I used both and had the same conclusion, I would go with the 12.5FTL before I'd go with the 14FTS but that's because I don't surf anything that requires FTS.
