Kalama E3 - 5'2" 105L
« on: September 06, 2022, 04:47:00 PM »
Looking at the Kalama E3, current/last board was is 5'8" 105L, 28" wide, zero stability issues. I'd keep riding it, but.....there's some build issues there. I'm around 80kg, mostly knee to waist high inlet surf, I'm not on perfectly clean waves, but......I'd rather go as small as I can get away with.

Anyone else tried this board?

I had Jimmy Lewis make me a custom, 5-10 x 28, best thing I ever did. Flys off the water and he is readily available to build one.

Ok, well that solves that, I love JL boards, that's all I have until I made this mistake. I'll contact him.

I have the 5'4" 104L E3 and no build issues. Love the board. 80kgs. I could use it on choppy days but at the age where I don't feel like punishing myself.

Nice, good to know, I think I'll keep the width (28"), but that really helps. What type of conditions are you typically in?

I like it in waist to HH surf with light to medium offshore.

If wind is too strong, or not offshore, then I’ll use my 5’9” 117L board. If waves are bigger then HH then also go with 5’9” depending how I’m feeling.

For me, it paddles and releases so easy. I had a tough decision on going with 5’4 over 5’2. Still don’t have an answer on which one is best! They’re both great boards. With the 5’2 maybe I could go out in wider range of chop. But then not sure it would paddle into the bigger stuff as easily.

Yeah, so I'm about 10 sessions or so in on the 5'2", a mix of conditions, beach breaks, a few larger days with chest/shoulder-high waves, and some short period inlet days. It is pretty easy balance wise left to right, but forward to back is a bit tricky to get used to, taking off I sometimes sink the nose. I do like it, I think I have a smaller margin of error on the mixed up inlet days, and may take out my larger 5'6" board for those days (even though it's a de'lamed POS at this point).

Once on the wave, it turns much, much better, and for whatever reason I'm getting faster overall wave times. Old board, comparable days, wave speed (top speed) was in the 15/16 mph range, now I'm getting 17/19 consistently, and I can feel it. I'm not sure if it just is the more efficient release to begin with or what.

So did you go with the Kalama or did you get a custom JL?

The fast, efficient, take off speed of the Kalama style boards, make the whole wave ride faster.
