The latest iteration of my 7-10 surf sup design (still in Shape 3DX) dropped from 114.5 liters to about 111 liters because of the V bottom with double concaves that was added. Thing is, I really need it to be no less than 114.5 liters. I could add more foam to the current 4 1/4” thickness but then it will feel like a cork and won’t perform as well.

I am considering a step deck with thin surfboard-like rails like Erik at Portal Surf Design’s was doing with his Barra and Phantom. The claim was that his boards paddled well due to the volume in the deck but performed like surfboards because of the thin rails. Erik seems to have disappeared though.

Here’s what he did with the step deck and rails: https://portalsurfdesigns.com/

QUESTION:

Does anyone have a Phantom or Barra that I could check out or at least talk to you about? I’m in the north San Diego area.

Thanks!🤙🏼🏄‍♂️

Erik seems to have disappeared though.
Why do you say Erik disappeared?  He is still dropping podcasts for the progression project.  It is my understanding that he can still be contacted for his designs.  But his latest passion project is foiling.  If you have trouble reaching him, try contacting Bluezone SUP as he is part owner.
The LongBarra has been on my wish list of boards to try.

Another person to talk to is Kirk McGinty, as Erik got inspiration for his own designs after designing a Pop Dart with Kirk.  I have a L41 S5 7'6" x 28.5" x 4.4" @ 110L.

Magenta, why not hit him up and ask him to sell you a design? If you get stuff cut at Basham's or somewhere safe I'm sure he'd send the file and have them cut it.

Thanks, guys. :)  Why not contact him? He deleted the contact page on his website a couple years ago and his Twitter, FB and Insta pages have been inactive for three years. I enjoyed all of his podcasts so I’m glad its going again.

I can try Blue Zone but first I want to check out one of his boards. Anyone got one? (I’m in San Diego.)

Did you look at a Blaine Chalmers board for some ideas?
I’m pretty sure he was behind the Tom Caroll boards that came out a while ago. I had an 8’2” for a while - fun board but heavy.

8,000 followers and posts in May. Not sure what you're looking at. He's just a foiler now.

Oh, ha, I was looking at this https://www.instagram.com/portalsurfdesigns/ which hasn't been updated since November of 2019. Thanks.

My last board was cut in a day and then gathered dust in the glassers shop for 6 months. He did  nothing on it and was evading my texts and calls so I finally rescued it and took it to another glasser and then he flaked out! (Is it the freaking resin fumes??) Flakes aside, even the best guys are still busier than they have ever been so it's nothing to wait 4 to 6 months for a board now. I don't want to wait that long. Also, I don't want to drop close to $2000 on a professionally made board that I may or may not like and then lose a $1000 when I sell it to get another that I will hopefully like after waiting months for that one. Aaargh.

However, since starting this thread I've been recollecting all the stuff I went through last year (mentioned above) so I've been re-thinking my options. My current design is the culmination of many boards I had before and it works well, and especially in the pocket, but I want to squeeze more speed and maneuverability out of it. Fortunately, I had that one designed on Shape 3DX so it's easy to make changes.

So, this is what I have decided; I'll have Brando at Rough House in O'side cut it again and I'll glass it myself like I did my last three. This way if I don't like it or just want to make some changes then I can at least get all of my money back when I sell it later. (Maybe I'll start a board building thread for my next one.)

Thanks for the suggestions about Blaine Chambers and Dave Daum. They are both GREAT shapers and if time or money wasn't an issue then I would consider Erik at Portal first and then Dave Daum since he's so close to me in Carlsbad.

I would still love to see a Portal Barra or Phantom but assume most are on the east coast.
