Which is the best low end 5m to 5.2m wing for shorter people?
« on: February 28, 2022, 06:57:49 AM »
I recently swapped brands to Mantis v1 wings as I loved the solid handles. I tested the 3.1m and then got a great deal (they are launching mantis V2) on the 3.1, 4 and 5m. I love the 3.1 and 4 for powered up days but I can't pump the 5 as it's flat profile catches the wing tips. It's also generally not regarded as a particularly good light wind wing. I am considering selling the 5 and keeping the other 2 and buying a grunty replacement. I am trying to avoid larger wings 5.5 or over and am not interested in winging below 10 knots. I'm 78kgs and have good technique pumping of board (-8L) and wing. Ive tested loads of v1 wings a good while ago but not recent ones. I do like the firmer 2 handle setup. Interested in hearing from anyone that's had a go on a few different ones. The new Unit looks good, I tried the Slick 5.5 a while back which was nice but weighty. When I learnt the Slingwing 6.4m V2 was a beast..Lol.. The outgoing unit is supposed to pump well. Open to suggestions..

The foil I was using was a HA 1350. The other option I know is to get a bigger foil for light winds but I love the speed of this foil. The conditions today were 11 to 13/14 knots with big holes and pretty choppy/confused sea. Not the best..

I'm not very big, I weigh in at 69 Kg or so. I use an Armstrong 4.5 on most days when the wind is over 14ish. It's pretty grunty for it's size. Real has a video comparing 5m wings which may help with your decision.

As I like the 5m with a bit of wind I'm going to add a compact 6m for the coming summer.. May try the latest Gong 6m superpower. Only 319cm Wingspan.

The Takoon V2 and Smik V2 are light, compact and have an pretty good low end (imo a lot better as the DT Slick that I own in 5m too) handling from both is great.

I'd like to see a 5M F-one in the CWC design. It could be as short or shorter than a 4 M. Even big mooses like me dislike dragging tips.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Yes, I have a vested interest in this reply, but check out the Ensis 6.2 compared to the Ensis 5.2 in these pictures:D

While I haven't measured them to be able to give you the exact numbers and can't find them online, the 6.2 appears and feels in flight to have the same wingspan (maybe even less) than the 5.2 does. By the looks of things, it seems that they gained the extra meter in the 6.2 by widen the chord vs wingspan.

The score 5.2 feels and handles IMO as big or even bigger as an duotone slick 6m.

I purchased the Gong and will feedback.

Takoon 6m 3.54m Wingspan
Gong 6m SuperPower 3.19m WS
Love to know some more.

Annoyingly brands don't seem to publish these important facts. A big wing for a smaller guy/girl this is super important.

I love Takoon wings, very simple concept. I have had 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5..

Slick is nice but weighty when flagged and not massively grunty, great in transitions

One of my first wings was Slingshot V2 6.4m which was awesome and only around  3.5m wingspan and light. Whenever anyone asks what to get to learn with unless they are super light I always recommend that.

I've never been a fan of fone wings although plenty of people clearly are. As stated above a compact 5m CWC would be interesting.

Hi SurfIC,

Maybe give the 5m Naish Matador LT a try.   I'm 5'9, so not particularly tall, and weight 75 Kilos, riding an 85L Naish board. 1240 HA foil, so our stats might be similar.
I started with the 5.3 Naish Wingsurfer, which had a very wide wind range, but not very powerful at it's low end, so, Changed to the 5m Matador LT.........completely different story! grunty, easy to pump, and now has three handles, as opposed to five, and they are firm.  I don't need a bigger wing.

I have a 5.2 WK Takuma for my big wing at 200 pounds plus wetsuit etc. It has insane low end but is on the heavy side and flies a bit nose heavy flagged out. Otherwise it's a nice option and likely close to the Ensis 5.2 in power. Once you figure out how it likes to be flown it's a great wing. Just don't ride it over powered as it becomes a real handful.
6'5" 200 pounds. Armstrong HA1125, HA925, HA725, HS1850, HS1250 Foils. Armstrong 5'11" FG, Quatro WingDrifter 72L, KT 3m, 4m, 5m Armstrong V2 A-Wing 2.5
