Sayulita
« on: February 17, 2022, 04:58:18 PM »
I just spent five days in Sayulita. A happy delayed consolation trip from cancelled holiday travel plans. I decided to go stress free and not rent a car, which meant I did not go to other breaks around Punta Mita… But it was great just chilling in one place. It’s a longboard heaven. And lots of local talent… men and women… (boarding talent).  A few SUPs. But one of the effortless best of them all was a SUP’er on a New Deal, looked like 9’.  I rented a 9’3 Starboard Wedge.  Could catch anything, but kind of a cruiser.

If anyone‘s interested I can share intel on good places to stay - a good place to rent quality boards (https://www.surfmexico.com/high-performance-rentals/Surf )(they deliver) - good places to eat  - a good place to get your Covid test for USA re-entry, however long THAT will last.

Highly recommended… both Sayulita and not having a car in a walkable Mexican town : )

That's a fantastic photo, STC ...

I was talking with an expat (named Pat) who runs a surf shop and restaurant on the beach... "no one here dies from stress related illnesses..."

I went there a couple of times, these pictures are from 2006. Really loved the place. We went to Punta a few years later and we couldn't believe how much it had grown.

Great to hear you had a nice trip.  I'm planning to head back down that way over the holidays next year.  Great to see the shop has pretty good rentals now. Back in 2014 they were pretty slim pickings so I had been planning to bring a board with me. Did you rent ahead of time and pick out a board or just show up to see what they had?  I just checked and am impressed they have a 7'10 x 29 Starboard Pro in stock.  Looking forward to a choco banana!

You’re able to reserve specific boards, which is nice. That requires an online reservation (and payment) in advance. I don’t recall what the cancellation policy is.

The shop is not in Sayulita, but they deliver and retrieve for rentals of 5 days or more. The online reservation automatically prompts the delivery info if you enter the 5 days. (Although the owner Adam did say he would deliver a 4 day rental.)

email -  adam@surfmexico.com

The paddle was a very decent Starboard carbon adjustable, with an appropriately sized (smallish) blade. There’s a small upcharge for that paddle.

The rental reservation defaults to 9:00 AM, so I was kind of expecting it to be delivered at 9ish. It ended up arriving at noon. So if you go the delivery route, you might want to coordinate better than I did.

Curious if you saw any foilers there.  Obviously not a good location to foil with the crowded lineup, but I may travel there soon and I love to foil. Wondering if I could sneak in a dawn or sunset session when it's not too crowded.  Or session a wide peak that doesn't really break.

I saw no foilers over five days. Honestly it’s mostly locals and longboarding is the thing. You might be able to hang out back and pick up some swells forming early without having anyone around.
That’s just the relatively isolated Sayulita situation.  I don’t know about foiling opportunities at the Punta Mita spots.  Maybe someone here does.

Great that you can reserve specific boards - thanks Dusk!  If I'm not mistaken, the shop is in Bucerias which is on the way to Sayulita/Punta Mita from PV.  I picked up/dropped off a board in person several years back.  Looks like from their site that they have Foils setups available to rent.  I would reach out to them about locations but I definitely wouldn't foil in Sayulita - it's a pretty crowded beach break.  There are a bunch of points in Punta Mita that may be better suited.  Some are accessed only by boat as shown in the Map.

How is Sayulita/Punta Mita in August? Looking to maybe take a quick summer trip, of course as soon as that happens, there will be a hurricane in the Atlantic and I'll miss surf.
