Living in Maine, but grew up sailing in RI. Started climbing in college in AZ. But the ocean was calling, and I got back into surfing, but my back had issues that SUPing helped, so that planted a seed of doing something different.  I’d been thinking about borrowing my father-in-laws old windsurfing gear, but was never inspired, thought about getting into kite surfing, but where I go the launching seemed problematic. At the beginning of the pandemic I discovered wing foiling on YouTube, and I was like Vader:” that’s it!” and ordered a kit. The first time I rode it behind the boat will forever be etched in my brain as the moment it all changed. Now when I meditate foiling is what my monkey brain goes to almost every time.

Same here. Foiling has become a big distraction during meditation. It also interferes with my driving. I often lie awake at night visualizing being on foil and have to keep bringing myself back to the present.

I cant remember when that video of Kai Lenny came out.  You know the one. Kai effortlessly gliding downwind on a foil attached to a chopped downwinder SUP. That video kept me up at nights, many nights.  Having spent a good deal of time riding an Air Chair behind a friends boat some 10-15 years earlier, I had a pretty good understanding of how foils worked and how strong they needed to be. I also had a pretty good understanding of composite construction having built all of my own surfboards and SUP boards for 10 years.  I needed to get my hands on this new technology.  Since that was not going to happen as quick as I wanted (could not buy them yet on the east coast), I was building a foil , less than two weeks after seeing that video.  Not long after that, I was foiling at the end of a rope tide to a bridge, taking advantage of the strong tidal currents Maine has to offer. Its been nothing but the most exciting and engaging experience I've yet to have in this life. So many different ways to use this incredibly efficient technology.  And Now Wings!  I just have to say, I feel the learning opportunities are near endless.  So many techniques to wrap my head around and practice, I only wish this sport was around when I was 22, not 59.  Nonetheless, It'll keep this aging body and mind  a good 20 years younger than it should be. Merry F.....ing Christmas everyone.  You Know,  F.......oiling!

I was just on nice hike with my kids and parents, but when we crossed a bridge over a smooth but fast river I wasn’t with them anymore. I was inventing a new sport: river foiling. Get on foil with a doubled line, pump around down steam with one end of the cord coiling it on the go. Go as far as you can, repeat.
