Harness alternative
« on: November 27, 2021, 06:08:49 AM »
I was just curious and wondering if there was something other than a harness that would help prevent arm and hand fatigue...
I was wondering if something like what gymnasts wear for the uneven bars
Then I Came upon this product on a FaceBook Vintage Windsurfing group...it was listed as one of the worst products ever designed for windsurfing so obviously it was a failure.  But interesting nonetheless

Back then, boom diameters were large. Large grip causes forearm fatigue. As materials advanced, boom design became a race to see how skinny grips could become before they broke.

We don’t have those issues anymore.

I remember seeing that ad in the magazines back in the day.

I've only just started researching harnesses. I'd like to see what has worked so far.

Well, I sort of followed Bills lead and sewed belt loops around the bottom of a Forward WIP 50N vest and installed the FW hook belt on it. Going to give it a go tomorrow if the forecast is correct.

What's the best way to attach the harness line to the handles if the wing has no attachment points, and/or what type of line setup works best?

Splice a loop in one end of a piece of Dyneema, tie some knots in the other end. Use a pigtail with 2 loops on the back. That's how Ozone and F1 do it.

FW ties a knot in the end of the Dyneema and ties it on with a constrictor knot.

I just bought the F1 line because it was $15. You can barely make you own for that price.

I use this knot, with a stopper knot on the free end. 4mm paracord is enough, with or without plastic tubing.
Place anywhere on the handle, when tightened it will constrict the foam and stay in place.

So basically a clove hitch with a little extra pressure on the bitter end. I'll have to remember that, I use clove hitches often, sometimes with the bitter end loop that lets them fall apart with just a tug on the bitter end.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I am using a harness now, but I did experiment with weight lifting hooks initially.

I got the ones in the picture from amazon for ~20$. I did slightly unbend the hook.
They work ok if you use a handle wing and your front hand with under-grip. That way the hook will give you a "strong finger" which was enough for me to go on longer stretches.
I NEVER hooked the back.
Since my palm would face down on the back hand, the hook would dangle until I'd turn the hand when jibing/tacking.
Other considerations:
This might be a good solution for people starting on land with skis etc. as you can always de-power by letting go of the back hand.
Getting back onto the board, they can be in the way and now that I am used to the harness I would not go back to them.

those are wild looking Randomfoiler.

I attached the harness lines to my F-One Swing wing today and planning on using them today as its very windy here in the Grenadines.  my arms and hands were pretty exhausted after a few sessions the last few days.

having windsurfed with a harness for ages, it should be easy to learn, but between the hand leash, waist leash, handles, harness just so much stuff.
