Interested to hear what wind people use a 3m Wing in.. :)
« on: October 06, 2021, 11:30:20 AM »
... particularly if you are around 75 to 80kgs.... I seem to like small wings and would prefer to ride a slightly bigger foil particularly as the waves aren't huge that I am playing in. When does the 3m (or 2.8, 3.2) work for you? Possibly say your weight and what foil you are use it with? One of the resosns I ask is that many of the manufacturers state 25+ knots for a 3m. This seems high to me? Thanks for any feedback..

I use my 3.3 Unit in anything above 16 knots. I’m 80 kg on a Naish HA1240 wing.

I'm working on a highwind kit for this winter in the gorge. 85kg on a Helium Kujira right now. I just ordered a 2.5m to try and keep the option of getting on the water when the winds reach 40knots mid winter.

please include your board size.  80kg on a 100L board is vastly different from 80kg on a 40L board.

3m BRM in winds 18-24mph with 60L board and 925-1250 Front wing at 65 KGs.

25+ I can grab the 2.2M

There’s nothing better than being comfortably lit on a properly sized wing. Lucky enough to have a quiver of BRMs (2-6) and I prefer to go down a size if I can. Sheeting in vertical and zooming around is mighty fun. Umbrella riding with burning forearms, less so.
I’m a 5’9” 65kg rider:

Boards:
   4' 27L Armstrong FG Wing/Surf
   4’5” 34L Armstrong FG Wing/Surf
   4'11" 60L Armstrong Wing/Sup

Foils: Armstrong HA525, HS625, HA725, HA925, HS1050, HA1125, HS1250, HA1325
Wings: BRM 2M & 3M, FreeWing Nitro 4M, OR 5M & 7M Glide

Thanks for responses this is what I'd hoped for. The published 25+ knots for a 3m seems way off. Its the umbrella riding on my 4m which impacts on the fun factor particularly on very gusty days. BTW, nice video and the Naish 1240 HA looks a nice foil!!

That f-one in the video looks pretty small too. Maybe a 4.2? That must be a very steady 15kts. For myself, a 3.5 is 25 mph plus, and I'll often be wishing I was on my 4.2 in the lulls. I'm 102kg, my board is about 130L, and I use a 999 Axis every chance I get though the 1150 is always in reserve. My 2.8 comes out at 35 plus, feels like a hankie. I'd rather be overpowered than underpowered, so my 5.0 and 6.0 gets a lot of use.

So did mine, when i first heard Abel Lago,KDmaui and others claim they could takeoff in well below 10kt with 3.5m sails and 1200cm2 foils.
But then i started to get a bit better at pumping and i am not so incredulous anymore.I am winging very  happily on 4m in conditions that i would have found impossible on 5m not so long ago.

Judging sea and wind state from a vid is tricky, the camera tends to downplay both. But i do not think there are more than 15kt in that vid.

BTW i have never met David John in person but from his posts he is no braggart.

It's doable as you can see in the video. Right equipment and skills are required.

Ha.. Fair comment.. I think the same when I hear about people foiling in 6-8 knots.

Getting up in light winds can vary on conditions regardless of wind strength.. Gusty off shore winds in flat water can often be easier than the same wind in a steady onshore direction.. To be perfectly honest about the day of that vid the wind was more in the 5-20 knots range with the wind being stronger out the back (further offshore) but where I was (closer in) the wind was more 0-15.. and the 15 knot gusts had some punch in them.. The wind soon dropped off even more and the combination of a small wing and a small foil wasn’t working great for me causing me to drop off the foil in the big wind holes.. My options were to either use a bigger foil to glide more through the holes or use a bigger wing which is what I did.. My small 3m is orange and at the end of that vid I was using 5m red Matador.. So there you go.. I was able to get up with my 3m in wind in the 10-15 knots but there is obviously slightly more to it than that.

Thanks people, interesting read as always. My main concern was I get a 3m and rarely use it due to my main conditions being 10 to 25 knots. It sounds like 20+ is doable now and possibly 16/17 + in the future for my 78kgs... Happy flapping peeps!!!
