Armstrong HA925 Thread
« on: September 30, 2021, 08:53:24 PM »
About 4 weeks ago, I asked the question if anyone had winged with the HA925. After watching a very talented rider at my local spot just killing it with one, I decided to grab one.

As of this past week, I've now had four sessions riding one with my 4'8" 69L Jimmy Lewis board, Flying V tail, and V2 4.5M Armstrong (I'm 165lbs). All in marginal conditions, but hardly a marginal experience. The 925 has exceeded my expectations more than any piece of foil gear I've tried. This morning in 10-15mph winds. Even when the wind occasionally dropped to 6-8mph, the foil was so efficient, I was able to stay on foil by pumping and building apparent wind in my wing.

I hit a personal GPS speed record of 20.3mph dropping into a waist high chop with the wing flagged behind me. I also survived a hard turn when the tip came out of the water (I could hear it) without any consequences, it just flowed through. The glide is off the charts, turning is very similar to the HS1250 and I'm finding as I figure out the technique, I think I can get it up onto foil in less wind than the 1250.

I can't wait to try this in some bigger surf and, even more, I can't wait until the rumored HA725 surfaces at some point in the coming months. This foil is a total game changer.

I know a few of you have tried this, how's it going so far?

I've had much the same experience. I'm thinking of selling the 1250 as it seems redundant now and I'm enjoying the 925 so much. It's a great feeling riding a fast/efficient foil in lighter air even if it's more physical to get up and moving. I've yet to feel over powered on this foil and it just loves speed and hard turns. The 725 will be a weapon, I imagine!

Have you had any time with the 925 in overhead surf? Looking promising on Oahu for some solid wind and NE waves heading into Kailua. Could be a really fun week and weekend.

So far I've only ridden head high+  wind swell and 3' waves. I've yet to hit any speeds that unsettle on this foil so I imagine it'll be amazing in overhead surf.

Two days ago I had the 925 and a 2.5 Armstrong wing out in head high plus wind swell in 30-40 knots. Handled sudden speed bursts and turning on the faces super well. Every session feels more dialled and the performance from this foil is so good. Surprised there hasn't been more user feedback on the 925.

Me too, but I wonder if not a lot of wing foilers have tried it yet. Just got back from session with 15-20mph winds and occasional overhead surf, hit 24.4mph while dropping into a slightly overhead peak. Thats how fast I'm going when dropping in windsurfing while wave-sailing. Even more surprising, the foil seemed like it go more stable. I don't think I hit the top and wouldn't be surprised if you could hit 26-28mph in bigger surf... not sure I want to do that, but there's potential.

Technique definitely matters on this foil. I'm finding that I need to aim further down wind than I did on the 1250 when getting up on foil.

Listen to the latest progression podcast with Kane DeWilde. He puts the HA Armie wings and the lift 120 on a pedestal as the most efficient wings on the market.  Some really interesting tech talk about hydrodynamics and wing designs.

Fun session with my local windsurf crew riding the 925 with 85 mast, 60 fuse, fv200 +0.5 at 5 mast setting on a 60L FG. Slowly pulling them to the dark side.

Starting to dial in the 925. With footatraps 1cm of mast slide can change the game.

Is the VB in your tag "Virginia Beach?" If so, was the video at Chick's Beach?

I rode the 925 today in smoking wind and several feet overhead surf. I was lit on a 3.5 Ensis. While the 925 was still a lot of fun and held up well, I could see going to the 850 when the waves are this big and have the power they did today. There was no shortage of energy to propel my friend who was on my 850.

Today probably would have been the day for the HA725, lol. I know they are in the hands of the team riders.

Yeah, VA Beach! I’m up the bay from Chicks Beach at York Point. A windsurfer built a house on the point with 270 degree water front. Outgoing tide against the windswell had a gorge regular calling it every bit as good as the gorge gets(didn’t film that session of course).  I put on the 1050 for that session and wished I had on the 925 for the bump to bump connections.  Super tightly packed chest to head high swells. Had all the wingers come join me today and we were just lapping this section and flying in formation down the swells hooting.  ;D

The 725 is looking super spicy and I can’t wait! Austin Tovey was connecting waves in his post so it may be linkable for mortals.

Funny, I windsurfed there through the 90s. You need to get Dave Lewis out there with you! I’ve been trying to convince him that he would love it once he figures it out.
