Armstrong FG 5.11 riders?
« on: September 13, 2021, 12:31:42 PM »
Hey all, I'm 6'5' 90 kgs plus 5mm suit and am looking at the Armstrong 5.11, 115L for SUP foiling (I have smaller boards for wing foiling). I'm coming from the Sunova Aviator 6.4, 115L but find the boxes way too far back for my Armstrong mast placement. It was fine for learning, but I want more reactivity now. Any reviews from the 90kg and over crowd? Paddling stability/handling, etc? Thanks in advance!

One thing for sure, you don’t want to go any smaller. I would recommend 120l at your weight unless it’s clean conditions. I’m 86kg, on 6’5” jimmy L, and fall off it about 30 times a session waiting for waves.

a lot does depend on the outline and width though.
I'm similar weight and fine on a 30" wide 115L and can just barely stand on a 27.5" wide 107L

I went with the 5.11 for SUP (couldn't get a 5.8 before January). but took it out for its first go with a wing the other day in 3' surf and 15 knots. For winging it's definitely a big board, but I was truly amazed with the ease of launch and flagged out turning/maneuverability of this board due to the FG track placement. Compared to the previous Sunova 115L there's no contest primarily due to the foil finally working with the board properly. HUGE difference. I think it'll paddle well for me no problem, though the recessed deck takes some available width away for standing. I'll report back after I get some sessions on it. So little user info on these boards!

I’ve been SUPing the 5’11” for about 9 weeks now. 180lbs and am really liking it in every way except for the weight. My wife’s 5’8” is so much lighter. 115L is probably the lowest I would want to go with. I’m still able to paddle into non breaking waves as long as there is a little steep section. But it is much more work than the 6’ Kalama I was using. It’s much more playful on the wave than the 6’ Kalama. Very satisfied with the switch! Next board will be something lighter to help with the pump game.

Finally got the 5.11 in the surf (head high plus) in challenging/shifty conditions. Broke my leash after 2 hrs but definitely got a decent sense of this board. Pumps well for the size (used setting 8, 72 mast, 212 tail, 1250, +1 shim). Turns so much better than my previous board. Does feel somewhat hefty for a a premium board, but if it holds up I can live with it. The recessed deck will take some getting used to as it takes a little width away from what's actually available, but it's quite stable in the sweet spot. Can't wait for more sessions.
