Rocker(less)
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:12:29 PM »
The talk of the town is that for a flatwater SUP...the less rocker the better. However, is there a such thing as not enough rocker? I mean,  how about just DEAD flat with a slight Vee but NO rocker at all! What say you?

you need some nose lift to avoid being swamped in chop
but otherwise no rocker should work best in theory

You know, Ive been paddling some of my different boards here in Colorado on the lakes and flat rivers. Im currently designing some stock class boards for flat conditions.

The thing I wrestle with the most is rocker. You need something to initiate the entry, but how much? Just flat would push water unless your stance was a bit aft to pop the nose up, but then you're pushing water, not gliding through it.(assuming a dead flat board)

So what's the answer?

Doing a lot of work on the Aku Shaper, I like the look of 3 inches of nose rocker to 1 inch in the tail. It has a pleasing look to the eye and with the right rolled entry, should cut through relatively well. The last thing I want is for the water to "spray" out from the entry, and something dead flat makes me nervous.

But we'll have to build them and then see how they run.
