Gulf Coast SUPers and events?
« on: April 26, 2009, 05:55:31 PM »
I just found out I'll be living in Gulfport, MS for the next 2 years (Navy life).

I've been looking on the web, but it's not looking good for events.

Are there any SUPers in the area and do you know of any events?

Living in SOCAL, it has been far too easy to take the SUP life for granted.  I am looking forward to the new environment and flatwater (I'm gonna need a new board... 16' point to point)

Thanks
Vic

Contact Tommy Whittman at Gulfport Windsurfing over there.  He's a great guy and will hook you up with all the spots.  Should pick his site up pretty easy on the web.  And you're right, no waves over there unless you get a boat and then there's some great waves on the outside barrier islands.
Enjoy....tell him Stan sent ya.

Flatwater it will be.  Gulfport is a short drive to Gulf Shores AL. or Pensacola which has mushy breaks.  Nice small stuff in the winter.  Check out innerlight surf shop in PCola.
The outer islands of MS will amaze you..crystal blue water on these deserted islands..about 10 miles out from the shore.
You can always look forward to the hurricane season as well.
I don't know if 16' is necessary.  I use 11.5.
