Prone at the Gorge
« on: July 18, 2021, 06:29:16 PM »
Kyle Maligro just killed it prone paddling into a DW run at the Gorge using his standard prone foil board (no Kalama special). Watch this clip and enjoy the ride and laugh along the way:

Has this ever been done at the Gorge? Is it the wind against the current that allows a prone paddle-in?

2 years ago some Oahu guys tried and found it hard. Makai creative? Them along with Austin kalama rock started some runs.

The fact that kyle maligro is flying super fast in sections but his hooded rashguard is still blowing in front of him shows how much it was nuking. 35+

Were these conditions you got one day on your trip @bigmtnbill?

That’s right! I remember that now.

For sure it was fully nuking. I think Kyle had winged it a few days previously and probably thought, “what do I need the wing for??”  ;D

There are a few folks that do it. Mostly Hawaiian visitors. Dave Kalama for one. A few years ago he was doing it repeatedly. He did some kind of bleach bottle cutup hand paddles to help get up, but he was doing it pretty easily. On a really good day you only need to get up once, and going prone means your board can be the size of a lunch tray, with makes for easy pumping. Most of the successful prone folk do long-ish boards for downwind, and then there's Andrea Moller who uses a board I couldn't get both feet on. Here's a video that includes Andrea prone filing on a Maliko run.

Does she tow up? How does she start?

I don't know, in this video, there are several boats because it was a promotional film effort, so towing was likely but she goes by herself a lot, so my guess is she's quite capable of getting up with just a bump. Actually, knowing Andrea, I'd say it's a certainty.
