V2 SIC Bullet or Glide V2
« on: July 08, 2021, 07:26:31 AM »
Looking for some long range/term experience feedback between these two boards. Got myself in a bit of a predicament committing to purchasing one of each, a 2012-2013 Naish Glide 14x27, [glass not carbon], and a 2015 +/- SIC 14’ V2 scc Bullet. This is a 1st world problem for sure, and actually quite stoked to be in this predicament  ;D

Both used in pretty good condition, very fair deals, but can only realistically keep one. Want to use it as a loaner inticement board for my wife and friends to come play with me, plus as a tool to increase my downwind skill set. And something that I can comfortably look the other way when it acquires new bumps, scrapes and assorted use marks……..not a beater, but not my precious Infinity either.

Obviously, the SIC will be lighter and easier to handle, the handle is the best there is IMO, but probably more fragile. The Glide, is durable, the wider tail making maybe more stable?, but gotta be heavier and more difficult to handle, yet most folks who have or have had one won’t let ‘em go or regret if they did. Both boards have solid reputations as good downwind catching tools.

I have a small window of time to try ‘em both but won’t see any downwind or down breeze conditions in that time……..just some flat water trials. That’ll factor in particularly as the loaner, but not complete the full picture

So basically understand the pros and cons of each, but looking for some feedback of those who have spent some “quality” or long term time on both, and which would you choose??

Thanks in advance!

Even though you ask for comments from those with LT time on both... I'm going to chime in. I've had both pre and post 2016 Bullet V2's. I think they've been the gold standard for downwinding because of the shape, yes, but that in conjunction with being light.  And the pre-2016 SCCs are the lightest. So if you want to ramp up your own downwinding, its your best bet.  My long term input is that if you take care of the SIC, the construction is not an issue.

The Naish is no slouch, and a better loaner. (I've had a few GS construction (not V2 Glides) and they're pretty bombproof, but heavy-ish at 14'.) You might check DavidJohn's Vimeo feed for older Glide material.

Thanks for  the input - appreciate it. I had SIC X14 for about 5 years and it faired pretty well, except for some careless garage maneuvering nose bashe  :(  live 'n learn. I posted the same topic in the Seabreeze forum that David John frequents, hoping "Naish" will catch his eye ;-]

I am concerned about simply loading and unloading the Naish - after a 27# board even just over 30# feels significantly heavier. Seems I've read some of them go well above the 30# mark........I am leaning toward the Bullet.

If you want some more time on a Bullet you're welcome to try mine (Lake Union).

Don't underestimate how the extra weight may affect the durability. In my experience, newbs damage boards loading and unloading them. Thankfully our heavier board is an inflatable because I watch it get banged into car racks, the ground and other obstacle regularly.

Good points, and thanks for the offer to get in some rides……..I’ll be trying to take a flyer to Portland area to collect them both Monday. DavidJohn chimed in on the other forum, and agreed that the SIC is probably the better choice.

I’ll offer the glide to friend first - which hopefully he takes, then I’d have a built in paddling partner - or post it on craigslist if he’s not interested - as you know there are very few decent boards offered up around these parts. [always amazed at what people are asking for beat to shit boards!]

Maybe by the time fall/windy weather kicks in around here I’ll have enough down-breezing in to have a decent feel for what I can and can’t do and go get out in it!

took the trip south yesterday, Hood River 1st, then to Portland - beautiful to see the Gorge in it's early morning glory again, and even the Willamette in downtown Portland was looking awesome yesterday, traffic aside!! Heading back out of Hood river into 35 mph headwind with the short purchase on my racks was unnerving.........not like the old days with a stack of two sub 8' sailboards. I hate using bow or stern lines 'cause they play hell with the car paint. Might have to find a work around for that..........

Collecting the Glide was very surprising - it was barely heavier than the Bullet! With the two of them stacked you could really see the similarities and the differences. Bullet's skinny tail, thinner nose, concave underside, and thickness in the standing area.  The Glide's wider tail, semi-uniform thickness, nose to tail, and more kick in the nose. Both have been tossed around a bit, but are very sound, and in great overall shape, [got some cleaning to do and loose the Big Winds rail tape and they'll look good to boot.] Still, nothing to worry about robustness, or the "first" bash - either one is gonna be perfect! Wanting try them both now  ::)

Stoked for you! I had a ride few years back on that glide, mild wind coastal conditions, much fun.
Would trade my left nut for a downwind trip to the gorge right now. Sweet!
in progress...

Have you tried using bowlines that are anchored under the hood? Keeps them off to the side, don't rub on the paint at all, super easy to install.

yeah, I have used those things, they kinda clamp in between the hood/bonnet either the edges or front…………worth going back to I guess, they’re just an extra layer.  Just have load the boards tail first & up to use the leash attachment………it’ll beat white knuckle

driving in the 50MPH range ::)

Reminds me of the huge hassle of loading - unloading windsurfing gear, plus rinsing it all every time you wanted to give it a go in marginal conditions - there were times when considering the extra effort would crush the enthusiasm for getting out & trying.[/font]
