S26 JET FOIL - 1650 or 2000?
« on: June 05, 2021, 01:41:37 PM »
I'm 63, 6' tall, 175 lbs. Total beginner after SUP surfing for 8 years. I'll be winging on inland bays and the ocean.

So I ordered my wing, 5m Duotone Unit.

And my board, Naish S26 Hover Wing GS 125 liters. I went with the bigger board because I'm hoping it will be easy to learn on at my age and might also double as a SUP foil board.

Now I'm trying to decide on a foil. I was thinking of the Naish S26 Jet Foil but can't decide between the 1650 or the 2000.

https://naishusa.com/collections/wing-foils/products/s26-jet-foil-complete?variant=33271097065554

What size should I be leaning towards?

The Naish foils seem a little high-priced. Are there any good alternative brands I should look at?

Mostly, I want to know what size front foil wing will work best for me with this board.

Sunova Flow  8'10 X 31"  119L

You mean 67 pages on Axis foils wasn’t a big enough clue?  ;D ;D

BSC1060

They sure don't make it easy for people starting out. Axis has some good descriptions of products and tons of choices but way too much information to process. It only made me more confused. I'm glad I chose the toughest decision for last. I was hoping someone might be able to simplify it for me, or at least share their own experience.

I just caught BSC1060. I wasn't sure what that meant at first. Yes, 1800 square cm is precisely where I placed myself but that puts me right between sizes in the Naish foils. That's why I'm having a tough time deciding. Should I go bigger or smaller?

After seeing the prices of the Axis foils, the Naish prices don't seem so bad.

The good thing about Axis is it's a solid well thought out setup, and if you guess wrong on wing choice it's relatively inexpensive to sell and buy another wing.

I would find a local shop/dealer or local crew/spot and see what they are riding, in other words get support and have people to go to for help.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

I have no doubts that Axis is a quality brand but their foils are just not within my budget.

The nearest shop is 130 miles away. I don't think we have a local crew yet.  My neighbor started wingfoiling last summer. Other than him I've never seen anyone else doing it. He's kind of making do with the gear he has and has been struggling with a very small board.

I thought this was the place to go to for help.

Hi Badger!! This is the place to go for help! I have a friend here in RI who weighs approximately 150 lbs. He has been using the Naish foils and has had issue after issue with his Naish foils. You get what you pay for, as we all know. I am very skeptical of the Naish foils. Now it's totally conceivable that you may never have an issue with the Naish stuff if you go that route.

Were his issues with the Naish foils mechanical or performance-related?

After looking deeper into it, the Axis foils are not all that expensive. About the same price as the Naish sets. My initial searches scared me off but after adding up each part, the entry-level stuff is reasonably affordable.

Axis looks like the way to go. Buying piece by piece requires a lot more thinking.

The foil is the most important part so I'm going to take my time on this.

The cryptic BSC1060 turned out to be very helpful and pointed me in the right direction.

Here you go! Hope this helps simplify. This would be a great starting point. Just add wings ass you progress. This will keep you going for at least your first season.

Thanks, I was in the middle of ordering while you were posting that. The website was intimidating at first but the  "Build your Foil" page makes it much easier.

My choices were very similar but I went with the standard fuselage, 500mm rear wing, and 68cm mast.

Total cost $1623.00, only $24.00 more than the Naish Jet foil. The Axis foils look way nicer and I really like the shape of the BSC 1060. I expect I'll probably get a longer mast at some point and maybe a smaller rear wing.

Hopefully, this set up will work well with the Naish S26 Hover GS and 5m Duotone Unit.

I know both of these foils well and either will work well but I’d steer you towards the bigger 2000 because it will make learning easier.

I’m a big fan of the Naish foils and I have many friends using them with no issues or problems.. The only issue that I know of is the possibility to bend a mast but all brands of alloy masts can bend if crashed in a certain way.

I’d suggest getting the new composite Naish mast in the cheaper C35 construction (35% carbon and 65% fiberglass) if you are worried about having any mast issues.

The new Naish S26 range is very nice and their foils have come along way from just a few years ago.. Unfortunately most people who put down Naish foils are comparing the ones from a few years ago with new foils in other brands.

Thanks for the input DJ. I had nothing against the Naish foils but I liked the looks, modularity, and wing shapes of the Axis products better.

One thing that has me worried is the weight of the 125-liter S26 Hover in the GS construction. I couldn't find any specs or reviews anywhere online so I'm hoping it's not a heavy barge. I probably should have spent the extra $250 and gone with the carbon.

I think you did the right thing and have nothing to worry about.. I’m thinking about buying a new 110 and I’ve decided to go with the GS if I do.. I like the grey deck pad rather than white and it’s a much more durable board and only slightly heavier.
