Lanolin
« on: May 23, 2021, 04:20:50 PM »
I've had great success coating foil bolts with lanolin and teflon tape. I rarely dissemble my foil, even after saltwater use. Every few months seems to suffice.
I ran out the manufacturer-supplied lanolin and need to buy some more. Anyone have a good brand they like? Preferably on Amazon? Even better if it came in a tube instead of a tub.
Thanks for the tips!

I just use my wife's leftover Lansinoh Nipple Cream. Know anyone who has discontinued breastfeeding recently? They might have some laying around. Comes in a nice convenient squeeze tube.

Funny you mention that. When you search "lanolin," 90% of the results include "nipple."
Does the cream offer the same protection as the grease? I assumed the cream was more hydrophilic.

I cannot recall the name of the product but it is a spray on underbody frame protector(from rust and salt corrosion) that is lanolin based.  Comes in a spray can.

The stuff is 100% lanolin with no additives, because crunchy mamas care. Its thicker than vaseline. It's probably also the most expensive way to buy lanolin if you are paying out of pocket.

Well, lanolin has a long history of corrosion protection, though you need to choose the right one. Like many natural lubricants it's a complex chemical set. There's an anhydrous component that is more or less water resistant and insoluble. There's also lanolin wax, which is thick and relatively insoluble. Unprocessed lanolin is mostly soluble and might not provide the protection you want for stainless in aluminum. Considering the cost and trouble of a galled or seized bolt I'd stick with Tefgel. The tiny amount I applied in Hood River two months ago is still present and working well after nearly daily disassembly in the warm salt water of Maui. I forgot to bring a tube with me. In fact, my aluminum mast has enough residual TefGel that the two long fuselage bolts I got from Mark and never lubed have given me no trouble even though I run them in and out full speed with an impact gun. Stupid to do--turning speed is one of the issues in galling--I've welded stainless to stainless fine thread screws to the point of uselessness with just a battery-powered drill when I was building the support structure on my moho project. I finally bulk sprayed all the fasteners with tefgel thinned with xylene.

I'm talking about Lansinoh Nipple Cream. It expensive to buy retail, but tons of women who are done breast feeding sell their unused tubes on facebook marketplace or craigslist.

Or you could buy a half-ounce of TefGel and still have some in the tube to pass on to your heirs.
