Wing Quiver - 5m plus 3m or 4m?
« on: April 03, 2021, 12:57:27 PM »
Ok so looking for another wing for the higher wind days here (20-30mph mostly.)

I have a Swing 5m and am 140lbs (63kg.) I’m comfortable on this from about 12mph to low 20’s. At my weight, 20 is rocking with a 5 and I’d like to drop a size.

The question is do I go to 3m or 4m? I’m leaning towards 4 as I think that might be an easy overlap and 20-30 is about the best days we see in SoCal.

But 3 would give me more range on top for trips to where the wind really rocks. What’s the real world low end on a 3m wing at my size? Or am I fine with a 4 and just borrow or buy a 3 when I make it to the islands?

I have a 6m+4m,as my pumping up on foil is getting better and wings are getting gruntier my next quiver will probably be 5 and 3.5m (i am 75kg).

The 5m is what i miss a lot...i think it is the Swiss Army knife of wing sizes :)

I’m 140 lbs as well and I have 2-6M BRMs. My go to in the 20-30 range is definitely the 3M. If it is in the upper 20s I will try for the 2.2M. The smaller size will allow you really big powerful pumps without catching the water.  Damien Leroys YouTube video on pumping has helped me tons, as I previously thought his technique didn’t work, but I was wrong. (Although the 5m swing (which I had previously) pumps very differently to my BRMs)
I’m a 5’9” 65kg rider:

Boards:
   4' 27L Armstrong FG Wing/Surf
   4’5” 34L Armstrong FG Wing/Surf
   4'11" 60L Armstrong Wing/Sup

Foils: Armstrong HA525, HS625, HA725, HA925, HS1050, HA1125, HS1250, HA1325
Wings: BRM 2M & 3M, FreeWing Nitro 4M, OR 5M & 7M Glide

Thx guys.

I had the same experience VB. Damien’s videos really helped me connect the dots on pumping the wing. Scooping with a catch like paddling helped me. I now pump through lulls that would’ve dropped me.

I have a 5 strike and a 3.5 Ensis. I weight 151 lbs.  Foils are 1850 and 1550

5.0 Strike gets me from 10 knots to 20 knots and I don’t think a six would get me much more on the low end.

Ensis 3.5 is a grunty wing that feels more like a 4.0. I can get it on foil probably around 14 knots, maybe a little less, but it feels super overpowered for me at 26-27 because the gusts are usually in the 30 range.

I don’t get much wind above 35 knots, so no comments in that range.

I think my overlap would be great for 10-30 with 5 and 3.5 Strikes, assuming the Strike has a little less power than the Ensis. So I’m looking for a 3.5 Strike (no one seems to have them).

In short and to answer your question more directly, I would not do a 5.0/4.2 Swing quiver, I would do 5.0/3.5.

With your size and weight, you can get away with a limited quiver, but if you're going to wing in places with higher wind, you're going to need more range. Places like Maui have wind consistently, but the range is 10-30 with gusts much higher. You'd want a 3M here, and maybe a 2M.

If you downwind the apparent wind falls quickly, so you need an upper range wing. Maybe a 4.0, but on lighter days a 5.0 would be better. For a two-wing quiver, I'd say 2.8 and 5.

Fatass guys like me need more wings, especially those who are addicted to high wind like the gorge. My new quiver of Strikes is 2.8, 3.5, 4.2, 5.0, 6.0 and I'll probably order a 7.0 Duotone Slick. If you do the math, those sizes are about 20% difference from 2.8 to 3.5, and the rest are 17% jumps. Any former gorge windsurfer would consider those ideal jumps since most wind increments day-to-day or morning/afternoon are in the 20% range--20mph in the morning, 25 at noon is a common shift. That's a 20% change. If a 4.2 is perfect for your morning session morning a 3.5 will be perfect in the afternoon.

Since you're light you can get away with bigger jumps, but in some places, you won't have easy choices--you'll be too big/too small for conditions. 2.8 to 5.0 is a 44% jump in area. Perfect at 15mph wind and at 30mph and a little bit compromised everywhere else.

My new quiver of Strikes is 2.8, 3.5, 4.2, 5.0, 6.0

Where did you get the smaller strikes?  I can’t find them anywhere!

I'm still waiting for the 2.8 and the 6.0. I ordered a full quiver from Winddance in Hood River as soon as I read about them. I like the wings a lot, and the blurb about them pointing upwind better is totally true. In fact, I'm having a bit of a challenge getting used to that. Every point of sail other than close-hauled feels like I'm going downwind. I'm sure I'll get used to it. The quality is off the charts good.

Thanks.  Emailed them to see if they have 3.5

Love my 5.0. Super light, stable and trucks upwind.

Thanks guys.

And thanks for the insight on the 3.5. That’s sort of my fear with the tighter more grunty wings. I’d assume that you want that grunt at the 10-15 range but less so as it gets stronger.

I’m looking to go up to about 30 and cheat 35 gusts.

Bigmtn, I’m going to try an Ensis but I’m thinking I want something with more “give” right now on my top end. I figure about the time I want to move on from my 5m Swing I can replace that with something with strong low end. But when it’s blowing here in lower wind we will see 15-25 gusts so you have to have something with some “shock absorber” built in. I can feather the swing pretty well and cruise.

Sounds crazy but when it’s blowing I want to be underpowered for now.

Keep an eye out for 3m’s for me Maui and OR guys.

I’m also tempted to do what I did with wings and buy a set of Gen 4 Gongs to test and sell if they don’t work. I’m about to buy a high aspect foil from them to complete the experiment before I decide if I want to move on to the inevitable Axis quiver that is a rite of passage in LA. Hahaha
