Axis 1050 In Tiny Surf
« on: February 26, 2021, 04:26:02 PM »
Today was a real eye-opener for me, in that after loaning out most of my gear, I was pretty much left with either an 860 on an ultra short, or the 980 or 1050 on a short fuse (with the 370 tail for all of them). Since it was "1-2' and firing" ;)...flipped a coin and picked the 1050...Wow, what a whole lot of fun that turned out to be.  ;D

Not only was it able to catch everything I turned for since it paddles so easily, I was amazed at how easy it was to pump back out. There were a couple of times that I didn't come off the back of the wave as high as I would have liked to, and with any of the other wings I've ridden, that would have pretty much been the end of it. But with the 1050, more than once I touched down but kept going, and it lifted right back off the water...and kept climbing! :o

While it was one of those days where there wasn't much to connect to, I was able to pump back out over several small bumps of waves, and out yards past the lineup where I had originally started...a first for me. It also turned way better than I expected it to do...laying it over was EZ-PZ, and it accelerated coming off the bottom of the turn and right back up to the opposite peak. Truly amazing.

So anyone out there has a 1050 that you've not had out in the surf thinking it was going to be too big (my initial thought actually), give it a try...I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how playful of a wing it is for its size, and the pumping is an absolute dream. Not just a wingding or downwind wing as I expected it to be. 👍🏽

Thanks for the review of the 1050.
I want to get one or more of the new Axis wing for sup foiling in tiny waves and connecting more waves. Until now I use the 1150, 1010 and the 1000 for that.
The 1010 and the 1150 pump better in a straight line but I very much prefer the 1000 it turns so much better...
So now I have to choose between the HPS1050 and HPS980 and BSC970 and BSC890.

I more and more prefer to use smaller foils (less than 1 meter wide and under 1400 cm2) so I thought I would not get the HPS1050 but after reading your report I might have to get it...

My friend prone foils the 1050 on small and tiny waves. Here's a video: https://fb.watch/433_glsrC7/

I figure a lot of folks got used to Maliko 200 and other early big low aspect wings. Especially on a SUP I’ll bet these lower profile wings do well.

Here's another day just last week with barely there waves that the 1050/460 made it much more fun and doable...

Nice conditions Califoilia.
I see that you continue paddling when you get up on foil.
Can you turn both ways doing this?
And how long is your paddle?
My paddle is nose high, perhaps I have to get a longer one...

What other foil did you use in these small conditions before you had the HPS1050?

Yes, but better to the backside...since I don't trade sides with my paddle while paddling or pumping, and it's always to my front side.

Head high, and sometimes that's a tad too short and I'll do an air whiff stroke when I'm up higher than I thought, or forgot to squat/bend deep enough on my forward reach and push of the nose.

Previously I really liked the 900 in 90% of the conditions...but for the 5% of the time it gets a foot or so+ overhead I'll go to the 760, and 5% the times it's dang near literally flat like above I'd go to the 1000 (before getting the 1050 which is just so much more fun...IMO).

But now I'm finding myself less on the 900, and more on the 890, 910, 980, 1050...and hopefully the 880 sooner than later. 🤞🏽:)

Did you never use the 1010 or 1150 in small waves?

The 890 is a BSC foil. the 910 a PNG foil and the 980 and 1050 are HSP foils.
The 890 (1290cm2),910 (1267cm2) and the 980 (1323cm2) are close in surface.
I am curious what you think of the 890BSC for supfoiling in comparison to the other two.

Thanks for the post!. I have the 1050 for winging in light winds.
Unfortunately I've never SUP foiled yet, it's one thing I need to learn. But wing and kite are taking all my time  ;D

I recently sold my 920 which I was intending to SUP foil with but never got round to.

Will the 1050 be fine for my first outings? My main challenge will be to stay upright on the board anyway. Intermediate + wing/kite foiler level.

No, haven't ridden the 1010 or 1150 yet...but I just got a 1010 in for cleanup/repair that I may have to hop on for a quick spin before working sending it back out....shhhh...🤫😁

Yes, different wings from different series, and therefore different chords, cambers, and ARs even though the SAs are relatively close cm2 wise.

Fun, but would be my last choice of the three to take out on any given day.

I had the 920 which I was intending to wingfoil with but never got round to wingfoiling period...supfoiled it once, hated it, and sold it.

Like I mentioned in another post wrt the 1050....

....if you feel real comfortable in your sup and especially your foil control capabilities...the 1050 w/ just about any of the 400 and larger tails...lifts way easier than expected (its a HA wing with less lift than a LA one), turns surprisingly well for its size, is fast, pumps incredibly, and is just super fun in really small to belly high surf.
So if that description fits you, then yeah, the 1050 will be fine for your first outing. Cuz like you say, your "main challenge will be to stay upright on the board anyway".  ;) ;D

I’ve been borrowing a 1010 wing and have been using it on a prone board with the 460 and ultrashort fuselage. Compared to my 910 wing, it seems easier to catch small waves, easier to pump (still trying to master that :o), turns fine for me but it’s definitely more stable. Overall, I like it and will probably buy one.

The 1010 is also a very fun wing in small waves. Happy to hear you're having fun on it. 👍🏽

Ah, thanks!  Sorry, didn’t realize the 1050 was a HPS wing. ;D Can’t keep track of all their different wings. Please let us know how the 1010 compares to the 1050. Preferably with a 460 tail. I was about to buy a 1010 but your review makes the 1050 very appealing!  I have the 910 wing that I use most of the time but being winter here, the waves are pretty small. So, I really want something that makes it easier to catch small waves (I’ve been on a prone board recently and paddling is a challenge) and that I can learn to pump with. The 1010 has been good for this but anything to make my life easier would be good. :o Plus, if it goes faster, that wouldn’t hurt.

You just described the 1050...and it pumps ridiculous well as an added bonus. Kind of have two conversations going on wrt it, so rather than repeat it...here's a little more in-depth explanation wrt it.
