Show us your Tracks: Waves-Speed-Distance-Time-Turns
« on: February 18, 2021, 06:50:30 PM »
We regularly share our sessions to show how things went.  There is nothing like a set of tracks to get a read on how good the session might have been.  The statistics at the bottom; top speed, longest wave . . . . icing on the cake.

Here was my session from today.  It was 5.5 to 6.5 feet mostly clean.  Nothing special BUT notice the time just 45 minutes.  It was a quick session at sunrise.  1.1 miles of wave riding.  Whenever you can catch more than 1 mile of waves per hour it’s a good session.

This was recorded on the iWatch with Dawn Patrol (free).  But I have recently paid the $15 subscription and the individual wave data is insightful.

When I started foiling my average ride was 60 yards.  This days AVERAGE was 215 yards with a LONG ride of 340 yards.

Turns are pretty obvious.  Not as RIPPING as they feel but noticeable vs. going straight.

What is interesting is the speed on the wave.  Each wave can be analyzed for flight speed.  Wave faces were 5.5 to 6.5 feet.  Not too much kick but enough to get the juices flowing.  On this wave I maxed out at 15.6 mph.  You can see the low end of the wing speed @ 11 mph before stall.

When you know the spot all you need to see is the tracks and the speed and VOILA the whole picture comes together.

Here for example was the morning report with a video from Jeff Clark.  He sent the teaser from Francis Beach in Half Moon Bay (It is rarely this good).  It read:

"Clean down the line 10 footers.  I am going here on my SUP."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfvuaHSlGC8

He later reported he paddled out with dry hair?

How? A channel I asked?  "I followed the green water and played chess!"   :o

He then told me he caught a bunch of rights regular foot flying down the line, 23 mph, and caught one left goofy foot for good measure.  He sent me his tracks and it was all TRUE!

This is why I stop measuring myself against the 20-year-olds in the sport. Haha. 1 wave. 2 miles. 9 minutes on foil. And that’s not even approaching what James Casey does.

Holy Schnock-Schnock.  Was that downwinding or connecting waves?  Size of waves?  Application (Looks like Dawn Patrol on its side).

Hawaii (I think) or Australia (e.g. James Casey land)?

Problem is he's not in his 20's...
might not even be in his 30's.

Kimo is a machine. Crazy to see what can be done just goofing off.

I did 2.2 mi on wing foil and felt like my forearms were gonna lock up. I come in and these jokers are beating me prone.  :) :)

Not a heap of turns but plenty of speed and distance.

Downwind foiling is so much fun when it all comes together.

A few observations here:

1) The young kid at San O:  Pumping around in circles.  He covered 5.1 miles in 2.8 hours or 1.8 mph of foiling.  That is quite good.
Average speed 5.1 miles / 28 minutes = 10.9 mph.  I would guess a short board, prone with a slow pumpy foil.  My wings start to stall at 11 mph much less the average speed for an entire session.

2)  Split times on the downwind (above).  2:25 for 1 kilometer Fastest --> 15.3 mph Average. This is actually quite fast and consistent with what you would expect from fast(er) open ocean waves.

Example of wave profile from Yesterday.  Conditions were easily 10 - 12 feet.  GoFoil NL130 with 7'4" SUP 'gun'.

I caught a chip and flew.  This wave was ~ 10 foot wave.  Felt faster on takeoff but only 19.7 mph.  Then the entire flight profile is shown over 360 yards.  Note the drop at the end of 11 mph.  Then off the wave.  Average speed 16.5 mph    But not for a kilometer.
