New board 14x22.5
« on: February 01, 2021, 09:30:39 AM »
Well since there seems to be no way of me getting fitter or stopping drinking beer I bought a new board. This will surely make me faster. I have no idea why I need to go faster but I'm sure you all understand.
F ONE flatwater board. 14x22.5. Pretty flat bottom with a small concave for the last third of the board. Pretty deep dugout. They say reasonably stable for a 22.5 board! Soon find out.
My hand held baggage scale says 10kgs exactly without the fin!
Not sure how to tie this too the roof racks, very carefully!

I hope its as flat as the pool first time I go out! 22.5 could be interesting!

Had the first paddle today. Not great conditions so stayed in close and did a few laps.
First thing I thought when I stood up was, Oh I can't move my feet apart anymore! This could be interesting. But the board is very stable and has great secondary stability because of the boxy rails.
Its definately fast. Need to do a longer paddle to get an idea. Did a few short runs and saw 8 km/h avg and 10 top speed. More when I was going down wind.
Went out into the chop a bit and the nose slices through the waves. Takes a decent size chop to get water back into the standing area. Seemed to drain OK.
Must say first impressions are good. Just happy I could paddle it. On a flat day it should be awsome.
Can't wait to do my normal 10k around the islands paddle on a nice day.

Oh and because it's 4 kgs lighter than my old board I don't need to loose weight!

I wish this (sup) existed when I was 11 ;)  but I did get to kayak in Alaska so not soon bad.
I am interested in dugout boards so please keep posting.

had to laugh about wanting to go faster since losing weight wasn't working. :D a nice slow wide board would be great exercise... ;) but hey I get it. Really when I first got my 14' Starboard and started hitting 6 mph and 37 ish 5k it motivated me to work harder... so it could still help!

Well yesterday was hot chocolate and biscuits.
 Today was not.
I left and there was about 10 kts and some swell. It was forecast to drop and the swell pic up. It does that when there is a NE wind offshore here. But today the wind came in. Which can happen as well.
I managed to paddle out to the islands with only falling in once so thought I would carry on. Sheltered between the islands and into a slight headwind and swell the board is great. When I got to the end of the islands I could see it had picked up. I should have turned around at this point. No, if I can get around the top of the island it will be a nice downwind run back. So I kneel and sit for a while. It makes a pretty good OC1 this board. Get around the top of the island and its not downwind at all. The breeze has built and gone North. Its about 45°. So this is where the not fun starts and I swim a lot. More kneeling and sitting. It calms down and I manage to stand up again for a while. The board is OK when you are dead downwind and managed to get a couple of short surfs. You have to stand back behind the handle or it wobbles a lot? Was surprised the nose didn't seem to dig in too badly. When it does it doesn't veer off and is easy enough to step back and lift it out. Or fall in, that works too.
By the time I got back there were plenty of kiters and windsurfers out.
Should have gone home and changed boards!

Yeah, that doesn't look like great conditions for a 22.5" board. Dugouts add a lot of stability as long as your upper body isn't moving around a lot. As soon as you start bouncing around most of that stability is gone.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Since you don't seem to mind swimming :D I'd say hang in there and keep building your balance.
By the time we shed this Weather and the extra gear and weight that comes with that you'll be zipping around on this board.

Also, a good fin might help...

I think the main thing is the construction of the board. Its just not made for this. I dinged the top rail of the dug out. I put my paddle across the board when I am getting back on. Must have bashed it a bit hard. I only noticed when I was washing it. When I fall I just let it happen and fall away. If I fell badly I could do some serious damage to the board I think. My daughter would kill me if I smash her board! It is only 10 kgs.
Only looks like a small crack a few cm long along the sharp inside edge of the top of the dugout area. Washed it and left it in the sun upside down all afternoon. I might run a light layer of glass over the top edge on either side, or some carbon innegra tape.
I must say I am impressed by the stability of the board though. I wish I had a camera looking back at me there would be some hilarious footage.
Burchas, that would have to be one special fin!

I use mariposa shelter off road tape on my dugout rails I figure it it can protect my carbon frame from rocks it can protect board from paddle and me.  I also now jump away from board on the paddle side when I’m going in and do a cannon ball with me legs to stay shallow.

You can get the tape in 5m rolls

Similar product, Helicopter tape: https://www.amazon.com/ISC-Racers-Tape-HT2128-Transparent/dp/B000TPC7HU/ref=pd_bxgy_3/141-4994923-2890925?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000TPC7HU&pd_rd_r=5e77d994-d7d9-462e-9979-66da8c24d039&pd_rd_w=NTNBz&pd_rd_wg=UXofq&pf_rd_p=f325d01c-4658-4593-be83-3e12ca663f0e&pf_rd_r=15WN6KE4MTK3RWJ9C76F&psc=1&refRID=15WN6KE4MTK3RWJ9C76F

I use it on all my boards to protect rails from concrete and rocks, up to 6 inches wide. As for the fin, don't under estimate the effect a fin can have. why not take all the help you can get,
even if it only cuts down on the number of falls.
