Lotta tech for eleven bux
« on: January 20, 2021, 07:44:10 PM »
Here's the core for the tow sled I'm planning to build. I'm going to leave my eFoil unmolested and go all-in on something that can pull me into offshore swell and then come get me. I'll include a refrigerator for the celebratory beer. I wrote most of the code in one evening. Well, I woke up at 4:00 AM and finished it, but absent a lot of testing, and the minor fact that I forgot to have the thing throttle down when it gets close, it's mostly there as far as code goes. Of course, I cheated like mad and stole big chunks from all over Github, but that's why it's there.

These modules include LoRa radio, wiFi, Bluetooth, an ESP32 processor, and GPS. the little square thingy in front is an OLED screen I'm going to graft right onto the board, and the board behind these little gems is a similar module with 3g phone capability. With a bare sim it could call the coastguard to do body recovery. Tech these days is freaky. If you can imagine it, it's already available. The future is here, it's just unevenly distributed.

That’s awesome to see. I love you’re getting this going.

Dear Pono, This is one of the most bad ass projects I have ever heard of.

How does it know how to return to *your* location? I imagine its similar to the quad copter "fly home" function.

Will you be posting the code for the project when complete?

Thanks

the two modules talk to each other and both have GPS modules. I'll be carrying one as a beacon and the other is in the tow. From the two locations, it's easy to calculate a heading and have the tow start heading to the beacon. Then the heading just gets updated as the tow moves. The navigation is simple, but I won't be able to use it anyplace where it can't just go in a straight line, I don't plan on doing anything complicated, just go from a to b and then stop. As soon as I get back to Hood river I'll start on the tow. I'm halfway convinced I should make it a catamaran--it's very easy to build hulls for that, actually easier than making a monohull.

Sure, I'll probably do some building articles on my blog and stick the code on GitHub and the blog. Don't expect elegance, my coding skills suck, I write poorly structured spaghetti that I have a hell of a hard time maintaining.

If you get it working Pono, I can have one of my guys look it over. They’d get a kick out of that I’m sure.

I’ll see if I can get working on designing this mini jet ski hull I’m envisioning down here.

Actually, I plan to do a very simple catamaran hull, a slightly larger version of the prototype here. If there's a simpler way to do an efficient and precise hull I don't know what it might be. The only problem with posting this here is that tech ingredients is the youtube version of crack cocaine. Stop yourself before you start building the desiccant based air conditioner. This guy makes me feel like a slacker.
