Shits and giggles/River wave foiling
« on: January 19, 2021, 10:22:57 AM »
Never has this wave come up so often.  It only lasts a few days to a week at a time but always gives me the chance to test new designs.   Sorry if the you tube link does not work.  It’s been a while and I always forget just what to do every time I try to post.

Thanks for posting that! I love how you've seemed to have found the "endless wave" that we all dream about.

The takeoff technique still have me a little baffled - riding backwards on a foil seems super difficult - but whatever it is, you definitely have it mastered. :)
Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

That's got to be way harder than it looks , impressive backward start  ;D ;D and how do you get back to shore in fast moving shallow water. Great skills BTW  8)

That would just mess with my mind trying to focus on something. Do you stare at the water? I guess just don't look sideways....
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

The backwards start is familiar to any whitewater paddler. The foil isn"t really moving backward in relation to the water, it's moving exactly the same speed as the water until he hits the wave.

Hopefully an answer to 2 questions.

As far as moving backwards through the water.  I am not.  I am actually moving forwards through the water , just a little more slowly than the water moving backwards.  I am paddling hard upstream prior to hitting the waves foam pile.

At these flow levels the water under this wave is approx 5-6 ft deep and the water downstream of the wave is 4-5 feet deep.  My mast is 33".  Either I fly off into the deep eddy or I fall and climb onto my board, foil down , and paddle to shore, only flipping the board upside down when I hit the shallows near shore..  Needless to say, Its a perfect foiling spot unlike most other river waves I've tried.

this looks so fun!  What is that board?  Did you make it - I like the shape.

Maybe consider trying to fly with the paddle in one hand.  When I started doing this, my balance really improved and my rides got a lot smoother.  I learned hohw to use the energy in the water to fly the wing.  It seems like you are using your paddle with those mini strokes out of habit - and it isn't doing much and actually disrupting your ride.  Maybe I'm wrong - don't take it the wrong way - I'm super excited about what I'm seeing here.
