Using W1100 with smaller stabiliser
« on: November 21, 2020, 04:00:12 PM »

We have been having winds where I have been very powered with the 3.5 Ensis so I decided to swap out the 483 stabiliser with the 421 stabiliser to see what difference it would make. (note I do not like the 483 for kitefoiling but it seemed to match up nicely with the W1100 for learning to wing).

It seems to loosen up the ride and allows the W1100 to turn easier. Feels easier to get the pumping action but not sure I was getting any more forward drive but then I am new to this and suck at pumping.

Was wondering if anyone else has any experience to share in this area.

Our water surface is wind blown swells in a large bay so depends on tides, wind strength, how long it has been blowing and also the wind direction as to how good and rideable the swells get.

I’ve only ridden the 1100 with the 450 and 483. The 450 might have been a wee bit more carvy and loose but neither made that huge wing as carvy as I would have liked. For me the 1100 always requires more of a flat pivot turn if you want to turn aggressively with it. I doubt a 421 is gonna loosen that wing up a huge amount.

Gunnar has way more experience with the 1100. These were his direct comments

421 is the fastest
450 is the best surf stabilizer and best low end
483 is the best for tricks (I assume that means longest glide)

I didn’t get the impression from him that these were very large differences. Also, a perspective of downwind/surf/all-jibes/lots-of-pumping is way different than one with lot’s of upwind transitions or combo transitions

General question. Does a smaller stabilizer generally reduce the lift?

I've been wondering about this as a way to bridge down to another wing, an in between step.
