Learn to Foil - Video Course
« on: October 05, 2020, 10:36:10 AM »
Hi,

I made a Learn to Foil video course with detailed tutorials showing and explaining how to foil.

Here is the main course page:
https://clayisland.com/learn-to-foil/

And here is the signup page:
https://clayisland.com/membership-account/membership-levels/

I dedicated years to capturing foil video footage and breaking down the fundamentals of foiling and what works and why it works.

This summer I have been doing the same with wing foiling and have been adding wing specific video tutorials.

I see this as a living course and am adding more tutorials as foiling and winging are continuing to evolve.

Here is short video from the course just for the Standupzone, I explain the 3 axis of foiling: Pitch, Roll, and Yaw:

Thank you, and I welcome all feedback on what you like about the course, how to improve, and what you want to see more of.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Here is another just for the Standupzone video from the Learn to Foil course - Tip Catch - see how we catch the wing tips in the water and what we can do prevent and recover.

This a condensed brief version, the full wing handling for beginners tutorial series can be seen here:
https://clayisland.com/wing-handling-for-beginners-wing-foil-tutorials/

Thanks!
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Good pointers Clay, beginners will definitely benefit from that advice.

...I think windsurfers, like myself, try too hard to hold the wing like a windsurfing sail and drop the tip into the water rather than holding hand aloft and above your head as in your videos.  I know that now, but when first learning I was digging in my tips all the time.

Hobie Raw 8'10"
Jimmy Lewis Kwad 8'7"
Naish Hover 95 liter 5'7"
F-One Rocket foil board 5'5" 90 liters
Fanatic Aero 1250, 1500, 1750 HA foils
CabrinhaMantis 3.5, 4m 5m. F-One Strike 7m CWC
Hobie 14' race board

I added a series on knee starts to my Learn to foil course:
https://clayisland.com/wing-foil-knee-starts-how-to-stand-up-and-fly/

"In this video series I show and explain how to go from kneeling to flying, on both low aspect foil wings and high aspect foil wings.  The windier it is usually the rougher the water is and the harder it is to stand up.  The first four videos are with a high aspect wing at different locations around the San Francisco Bay in 12 to 40mph winds.  The fifth video shows my beginner setup: giant board, foil, and wing and how I bypassed the knee start on such stable and easy to fly gear.  The sixth video shows how I moved down to a smaller low aspect foil, boards, and wing and explains how I did both standing and knee starts.  Both heel side and toe side starts are shown and explained in close up detail so you can see what my feet, hands, and body are doing to stay balanced and get flying."

Hope this helps!  Any questions please ask.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

I’m taking this course - it’s very good with informative explanations detailing everything you need to know!

I just wish all the spots to the secret locations were shared but I suppose it’s designed for everyone in the world and would be useless unless you’re local.

Where’s Clay Island?

Right on, thanks!

Clay Island Schmitz, that's my full name.  Island is also a Norwegian/Scandinavian (Viking?  :D ) name, that's where mine came from.

Naming surf spots can be such a sensitive topic, I want to help beginners find a safe entry point without overcrowding or sending a hoard of new foilers to a spot.  When folks ask me in a DM or in person I tell them, I'm still uncomfortable posting on the internets...

I have been trying to crack this nut for a long time, and I am super stoked to share this videos series on riding surface piercing or tip breaching without crashing:

Also I added maps and details on beginner wing foiling spots in the SF bay area:
