Filler
« on: September 14, 2020, 03:02:30 PM »
So I am tying to see what everyone use to fill holes. I am doing some repairs and there is a baseball size chuck foam missing. I do not have any extra foam laying around to fill it back in. What about the expanding big gap filler stuff from home depot. any other ideas?

Gorilla glue. Wet the hole first. Then brush a thick coat of GG on and mist it with water. Leave it overnight. It'll work just like expanding foam, but will be stronger and easier to shape down. You could probably make a whole foam blank out of Gorilla glue:)

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Agree. I’ve cut eps for big stuff but GG rocks.

Do the Beasho trick and put a partially opened paper clip into a dremel and whip it with some water. Blows up really light.

You can add a little baking soda too. I don't know why it helps but it foams up lighter. You can also add baking soda to cyanoacrylate glue to make a very strong but sandable filler that works well for hard plastics or dense wood.

Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

You do that in the ding or in a cup before putting it into the ding?

Gorilla Glue whipped with Water has the most consistent density.

Gorilla glue on its own will expand and form a hardened outer shell, that is cured by the moisture in the air.  What you end up with is a structure that can have large air bubbles, or voids in the foam matrix.  These bubbles can be up to 1/4" or 1/2".  Voids are NOT good in structural foam.

The picture at the end of this video On LEFT shows the consistency of the Gorilla Glue after it is whipped with water spray.  It turns toothpaste white when fully whipped.  Spreadable with a spatula and good expansion and tenacious adhesion to almost everything.

Just don't wipe your hands on your pantlegs. Not that I'd do such a thing.
