Foil set suggestions for friend on a budget.
« on: September 03, 2020, 07:14:08 AM »
This is the guy who took his 3-5yr old 9-0, Riviera NUGG SUP into the surf (w/o fin) along with a 4M WASP and thrilled the locals with his ability to skate out thu the surf and 'surf' back in a number of times. He's a competent SUP-surfer and adjusts his home repair business to allow him surf time - when required.  ..but, he now has Foil-fever. His temperature must be high - you can hear it in his voice. He thinks I know things I do not and wants a recommendation.
He's ~180lbs (85kg)

I have a memory (right/wrong) that a Neil Pryde Lg was a very good 1st gen wing.  There must be others. I bought/sold quickly, without trying, a Slingy Surf kit because it simply seemed massively heavy. (' may have been a mistake...?)

He's likely to use it with his WASP on flatwater ...and knowing him, he'll push it out thru local shorebreak.

Anyway, is there a specific wing or brand from 2018/19 that should not be overlooked for someone who is pretty restrained on what he can spend and can be expected to hold onto it for 2-3 seasons?  I would probably front it for him.

Thanks.  Jim

You nailed it. Neil Pryde not only was a steal at the price they sold for, but they were butter smooth, silent, and surfed unreal. Better than all these of the same era, Slingshot, GoFoil, Cloud IX, and Naish.

With Neil Pryde making a big comeback with kdmaui designed wings, fully compatible with the original kit, it is a no brainer future proof foundation.

In a year he'd upgrade to the KDMaui front wings. I've told a few people to go that route but no one's taken me up on it yet. :)  Used is good too if you can pick up one of the Axis sets that Admin let's go for a steal.

Neil pryde is a great foil and more future proof, as in won't outgrow it soon.  Also a bit more challenging to learn on.

Most stable and forgiving foil I've ridden is the slingshot 76/84.  And a used one is essentially FREE, but it for half price, use it until outgrow it, and resell for what it cost or a small discount.

Guys here in the bay resurrected their 84/76 or added a 99 to learn to wing on.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Thanks, guys...  As I said, Clay ..it may have been a mistake to buy/sell the 76 Slingy kit w/o getting it wet, but it seemed (without any direct comparisons) to be overweight to me.  Weight may be essentially meaningless in the water, but in almost anything other than a sledgehammer, weight often seems a substitute for engineering.   We'll go hunting.
