Tack sequence
« on: August 06, 2020, 11:07:07 AM »
I took this pic yesterday after my oil change for my car.  Actually three pics I jungle spliced together to help me grasp the 'tack'  The rider is a local boardmaker, who also made most of our downwind boards back when we did that and now produces foil boards.  Mark Raaphorst.  He's fairly adept on foil and quick with wing changes with both jibes and tacks.  Wind yesterday was filled into the beach at 30-40mph so he was able to be within range for my crappy cell phone camera to get a reasonable capture.  My cam went to B&W for some reason, which pissed me off, so I tweaked it to sepia for better contrast. He's on a sub 6' board that he of course made and an axis 1000.  Don't know which stab or fuse he used.

I have completed exactly one tack on foil so the struggles are pretty fresh in my mind.  There is a recent thread with more experienced people commenting and some videos people have posted but here are my basics for taking this on.

1.  For most people, it is easier to go from toe side to heel side (the opposite of your pictures)

2.  Practice the wing movement on land without a bunch of wind at first so it becomes second nature.

3.  Both hands should be palm down.

4.  I start heading up wind with some speed then vigorously bring the wing over.  That upper body movement helps you carve into and across the wind as you switch hands to repower your wing.  When I fail, it is usually because I cannot get my back hand onto the handle quickly enough and I fall backwards.

That's really all I know.  Most of my attempts are still failures but my success rate is very slowly improving.

Phils - about my understanding too. I'm actually trying to learn heel side to toe side first mainly because it's the way I windsurf tacked and also as my toe side riding isn't that great - I intentionally learnt to switch feet after gybing when I learnt to gybe as riding switch was never a problem for me.

My point of failure is the same as  yours - falling backwards due to not grabbing back hand quickly enough. Just not getting through the wind enough so the rear handle is behind my head rather than above my shoulder. Need to keep on keeping on!
