SUP surfing with a wing anyone?
« on: July 15, 2020, 05:36:20 AM »
A friend of mine who does not foil is interested in trying a wing to get onto waves versus a paddle while using his 9'6" SUP board.  I told him I would give him some tips and he could use my wings.   I thought it might work but  figured someone out there has had some experience with this, good or bad.  Any tips would help even if that tip includes-  "Its not worth the effort".

I've never tried it but I'm going to say it's not worth the effort. It would be very slow with little or no upwind ability in the surf zone. If it was possible, people would be doing it.

I think I saw someone on insta doing exact thing that you ask about but it was hard to come to any conclusion. Based on my experience with foil and sup - not worth the effort.
Addicted to foiling at the moment.
My shenanigans on insta @gone_foiling

It works, there are a few people around doing it, I've tried it--I have the perfect board for it, my ancient Starboard 12'2" X 26" not only has straight rails and not a lot of rocker, it also has a spot for a dagger fin in the middle because it was designed from the start to double as a windsurfer. Regular windsurf boards also work, though not as well as you might hope. I stuck a dinky fin in it and it pulled upwind like a champ almost as fast and good on reaches as a foil. If he's willing to do that to a board--even just an FCS box and 2" fin help tremendously--then he won't just wind up doing the walk of shame every run. When I didn't have a big enough wing to try anything else on lighter days, I did it a few times and it was fun--you can catch about anything and surf it, from dinky baby waves to oh shit, that's a big one. You'd wind up with the same kind of feeling of invulnerability as windsurf wave riding because you can outrun almost anything when things start going bad. But once I started having success with the foil I never used it again. Might be fun to break it out next time I'm in Maui. I think I'm far enough into foiling so surfing won't screw me up. It did at first--I'd pearl surfing and fall all over myself foiling.

On issue to deal with--two leashes. If you're getting worked in big stuff having one leash on your ankle pulling east, and one on the wrist pulling west, the thing in the middle (you) is not happy. A waist leash is better and in larger surf I'd make sure the belt was really strong and attach both leashes to it. Trust me on this one.

Thanks everyone!  Ill let him know and if he wants to retrofit his board with another fin box, he can see how it is.
