10 Commandments of Sup Surfing?
« on: July 03, 2020, 11:48:23 PM »
What would they be?
A few suggestions:
Pull yourself into the wave with the Paddle: donʻt push
Front Foot always over centerline
Look where you intend to go

-Thou shalt not have a proner before me.
-Honour thy shaper and glasser.
-Remember everyone surfs on the weekend.
-You're never that fast of a paddler or that good of a surfer.
-That God ..?... I mean F'n shoulder hopper..
-Dude that was my wave, but I'll be the bigger person and not mess you up.
-Your wife is hot, but... she doesn't surf.
-You left your KeNalu paddle on the beach last night (finders keepers) I wanted to give it back to you:)
-That guy makes shitty boards. The one I had barely hit the rocks, and next thing I know it's full of water.
-All my neighbor's stuff has too much volume, but I still like him. ::)
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I think it’s too subjective. Other than TallDude’s universal truth.

For example my front foot is usually off to the heel side a bit for leverage.

There are techniques like your paddle one, but it’s hard to make serious commandments as there is so much variation in surf style.

Example, I hate Laird’s wide stance. I love a relaxed feet together longboard stance. Which is right? Laird or Dave Boene?

Now, there are some safety commandments for sure.

Never be between your board and the shore.

Never sup surf without a leash. (Can’t be argued, I longboard without a leash and you cannot tell me you can control a board and a paddle.)

And my latest violation. If you want to keep sup surfing, never try foil surfing.

Damn, I feel bad lol. Did I kill this awesome thread? Come on guys, let’s post some things that for us “feel” absolute.

I’ll start with one of mine.

“Let’s some spots just be prone surfing spots.”

I abide by this unless conditions are so bad that it’s embarrassing lol. Malibu is a case. While I’ve put in enough time that I wouldn’t get yelled out of the water, I just respect the history and unique conditions there when it’s a “normal” day and take a longboard.

2nd, “know when to say when.”

SUP will let me surf way longer than prone but often I get tired and don’t notice it. When I start to fall just standing in the lineup I know to go home even though I know I could catch a few more. This one is harder when it’s good lol.

Knowing when to say when is a tough one for me. I just can't let good waves go to waste. I surf until I drop or get cramps. I sometimes do 5 or 6 hour sessions. When I get tired, I make poor decisions and can't speak coherently. I have to force myself to take breaks and stay hydrated. I like that rule. Know when to say when.

I think surfing with your front foot off center looks dorky.

Like most rules, "know when to say when" sounds good in theory, but when conditions are great, what are you going to do? Go home and eat scooby snax?

The first two rules of surfing apply to SUP surfing.
1. When there's surf, surf.
2. Never leave surf to find surf.

Tom, of course!

And yeah, Pono, it’s a rough one when it’s good. But also, if it’s good you probably need your wits about you. Badger I know the feeling. Can’t drag yourself back on the board but still say, “I could get a few more.”

Gee, you'd think I'd have this in mind after commenting this morning, but I overdid it to the point where I seriously considered leaving my gear on the beach. Why is it so light going towards the water and so heavy going back to the truck? We had weird flukey wind today, from a weird direction (southwest) but I was having SO much fun. Started on a 6.0, the wind came up and I went to a 4.2. I could have been on a 3.5, but I hate rerigging, even if all that means is pumping up a wing.

By the end of the day I was making one out of three foiling jibes. That's good for me. I just kept going until I could barely pump back onto the foil. Came in and hobbled back to my truck.

There should be a valet service for these situations.

Having foregone the rapture of SUP surfing for the humility of prone surfing I will offer this pentad:

1) You do not need to get *at least* one set wave from every set.
2) Thou shall not shoulder hop.
3) Thou shall not back paddle.
4) Not all breaks are SUP breaks.
5) If someone is on a wave it's your job to stay out of *their* way.
