FlightDeck custom foil board - build thread
« on: July 03, 2020, 10:36:48 AM »
Time to upgrade the toolbox. I've been talking to Peter from LP Foils about this for a while. Now that he's finally moved his shop to Lyle, he started working on this beauty.

FlightDeck
  • XPS core
  • PVC deck
  • full carbon wrap
  • Innegra

6'3"x28.5"x5" @129L, All around foiler. Shooting for 16lbs. Here we go:

what is the density of the XPS core material you're using?

'Lemon Bar' ...that looks tasty.  Do they place those 'guide fins' (whatever name..) that far forward?  I thought just fwd of your front foot?

Hot off the press :)

XPS density is 2#
Ventral fin is 56" from the tail

Core - 7.2 lbs
Tracks - 1.8 lbs
Inserts + Handel - 8oz

If the core is 7.2 lbs and the density is 2 lbs, then the board came out 102 liters.

Burchas, looks great.

I’m seriously considering putting a fin plug in the front of my foil sup. I can’t paddle in for crap without a wide circle. You may have inspired me. I saw Kalama on YouTube and then this. It’s a sign. lol

No need for any forward fin for any reason (on a foil board)...just lean/tilt the board slightly to the side you're paddling on, and you'll go straight as an arrow for as long as you like. I now have to remember to switch sides with my paddle so I don't just paddle on my natural left side all the time, cuz I'll sometimes find myself almost forgetting how to paddle on the right I do it so little most of the time.

Foam is 1.5# per dw correction. That's what happens when calculating under the influence.

Per ventral fin. Haven't had any issue paddling my 8'x31.5" hybrid in straight line but I figured it can't hurt to have the option. I got the same signal from Kalama Cowboy.
Worst case scenario, I'll mount a bayonet for some spear fishing. I have 3 footer Bass ramming into me all day long, I might as well get a meal while out foiling  ;D

DW, burchas, how do you calculate volume from weight of foam?

DW, burchas, how do you calculate volume from weight of foam?

A rough formula: Weight (Pounds) x Density (#PCF)= Volume (CU FT) where 1 cubic feet = 28.3 Liter.

A more accurate calculation with a 1 cubic inch of the foam on the scale like in this case:

• 1cubic inch of XPS foam is ~ 0.41g
• 1 liter of volume has ~ 61 cubic inches
• 0.41 x 61 = 25g/liter
• 454g/lbs : 25g/liter = 18 liters in 1 pound of foam
• 1 pound of foam has ~ 18 liters
• 7.2 x 18 = 129.6 Liter

Things starting to take shape... Story in pictures

1 - Filling in "ruffed up" core with a coupling coat (epoxy and cabosil) to promote adhesion between core and lamination /sandwich construction.
2 - Removing the wetout sheet from 282 carbon on top of core.
3 - PVC sheet foam placed on top of carbon.
4 - Core ready for vacuum bagging.
5 - Core under vacuum.
6 - PVC foam sheet (after overnight cure) ready to be sanded and faired in.
