Cutting down a KIALOA blade.
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:10:02 AM »
I'd like to cut down one of my old KIALOA/Nalu paddles to the Methane template.  Is it just a matter of shaping it down like a ding repair and reglassing the edges or are there hidden pitfalls?  Any info is appreciated.
Lots of foil boards 6’7”-7’4”, L41 TVD’s and Jimmy Lewis Strikers..

I cut 2 Shaka Pu'u paddles down. One was cut so narrow, the foam core was exposed. I spread some epoxy on the edge and never had a problem.

I've cut down my Kialoa Nalu into a narrower and shorter blade. You will hit foam. I glassed the edge with epoxy and a layer of fiberglass and sanded to final shape. Mastic taped the edge and I have not have had any problems so far, 6 months.

Any suggestions on what tool you would use to cut it with?

I used a round rotary grinder with 100ish grit...It took it down fast, be careful. Mark out the shape you want with pencil/marker first.

If it was me I'd just use a hacksaw and wear a mask so not to breath any carbon fiber dust.
