Zoner injured on foil sup.
« on: June 12, 2020, 10:31:00 PM »
I was told this morning by another SanO local that SanoSlatchSup (Dave) was injured when his board hit him in the chest. Apparently, he tried to shake it off and continue foiling but turn for the worst and was taken away in a ambulance. I'll try texting him tomorrow or maybe StandingDan knows how he's doing? Thinking about you buddy...

Bummer, get well quickly, Dave.

This reminds me that I'm supposed to be wearing my impact vest (haven't been)--doctors orders. I got whacked in the chest years ago and my layman interpretation of what the doc told me is that I separated most of the cartilage from the bone in my breastbone. It's lumpy and crunchy (technical term). I'm sure that's not what he said, but it's what I remember. Apparently, if I do it again it may crack open like a lobster shell.

Any of us can get that kind of injury, mine happened on a SUP, it's worthwhile assessing the risks that each session offers--it's always different. I'm going to dust off my impact vest.

I found out from StandingDan that he's out of the woods and on the mend. Tail of the fuselage slammed him in the chest when working his way through the shore break. It collapsed his right lung. Then it got punctured while they were trying to insert a ventilator tube at the hospital. He had arthroscopic thoracic surgery and is doing better now.

Oh man! I don't log into The Zone for weeks and weeks and weeks and this is the first post I see. Hope Slatch is ok. He was super cool to me last year when I visited SanO. Those foils are muy perigroso!
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Ventilators are bad news, it would be good to come up with better ways to get lungs to work. My youngest daughter is a respiratory therapist. Diane has barred any conversations about ventilators or kids going through the front window of cars (she's an EMT also) from anywhere in her general vicinity.

Wishing him a speedy recovery.  If his lung was punctured during a medical procedure, it was probably a chest tube (inserted through the chest wall to help reinflate the collapsed lung) and not a ventilator tube (placed in the airway through the mouth to breathe for a patient)

Happy to report that Dave was discharged yesterday after 5 nights in the hospital, and according to his wife he has been resting comfortably at home. His right lung collapsed by 50% on the beach due to the blunt force blow from the tail of the fuselage. It seems that half the regular foil crew at SanO are retired fire paramedics, including Dave, so he was in good hands. There was even had an ER physician, who happened to be foiling that afternoon on a rare day off, paddle in and check him out on the beach. Many thanks to the lifeguards who were right on it and helped immensely with coordinating the emergency response effort and getting Dave's gear loaded up. We had all parked at trail 1 and biked in, and we couldn't have made it happen without the lifeguards and their awesome help in shuttling us around.   Only real glitch was the ambulance got stuck in the sand and took 3 hours to dig out. Fire Paramedics gave him a ride to the local ER in their rig so only harm done there was to the ego of the ambulance driver. At the ER, the vent tube was in fact inserted too far and served to puncture his lung which required arthroscopic thoracic surgery, adding an unfortunate complication to the matter. All is as well as can be now and we were forced to cancel the memorial paddle out this weekend. All those who had dibs on his sweet surf van are unfortunately out of luck as are the cheap skates who were eyeing his new Kings board and GL set up. Hopefully he'll have a speedy recovery and be out shredding in no time. Get well soon brother.

Wow, nice to have all that help nearby.

I got stubborn trying to save a switchfoot jibe today and got the opportunity to watch my foil wing pass my noggin with a few centimeters of margin. The closest I've come to blood in the water in a few years. Lets all be careful out there, and get well quick Sano.

Man!  Glad to hear that outcome.

Some fuselage tails look like weapons with the back wing moved forward.
