Fin into Deep tuttle
« on: June 11, 2020, 06:30:44 PM »
First hardboard and tuttle box.  How the heck does the fin go into this thing?  Can't push it in evenly, not even a little. Can insert front or back corner at an angle but then can't move from there.  What am I missing here?  Also in searching on this topic I see mention of 2 screws and my fin  (and board) only has one. ????

Most tuttle fins are single screw. It's not uncommon for tuttle fins to be too tight. If you bought the board from a shop you should bring it back and get them to fit the fin for you, its a fussy thing. That kind of board uses a tuttle? A windsurfer?

from my windsurfing days, I always used to take a flat board, double sided tape sandpaper on it and carefully sand the two flat sides of the fin's tuttle fitting.  go slow, take a little at a time and do fit checks

I remember reading a post not too long ago about one of the board manufacturers in Hawaii reviving an old tuttle concept for all their soft tops. can't find the link.

Thanks for the help, I'll get the sandpaper out.

Buy a set of calipers. Harbor Freight if in the US.

Sand the Tuttle mast head to meet these tolerances. Once you know the foil mast head is perfect, then you can feel safe about forcing it into the board.

Donít sand the Tuttle in the board.
