Vent Plug ?
« on: May 13, 2020, 08:54:33 PM »
Just picked up an older L41, eps board- no vent . It’s a bit of a beater with some repaired dings  but water tight.
Don’t know the volume but it’s :
8’10” x 30” x 4.25”
I live in Santa Cruz but we will likely take this board to Lake Tahoe / Sierras a couple of times during summer .  Board will not be left in direct sunlight or be exposed to extreme heat.
Based on board dimensions and usage ... should I install a vent ?

I’ll say that I can’t think of a reason to not have a vent. Not a hard install and worth the peace of mind in my opinion.

If my memory serves me correctly, I think Starboard is a company which does not install a vent plug in their sups. I like their board sups, but not having a vent plug is one reason I did not consider buying a sup from them.
Blue Planet Duke: 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 Liters (2 Dukes)
Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters
CJ Nelson Parallax: 9'3" x 23 1/2" x 3 3/16" @ 78.8 Liters (prone surfing longboard; Thunderbolt Technologies build in Red construction)

It won't hurt anything if you do it properly, and I'd be certain to make it a gore-tex vent so you won't forget to screw it down. But it's not entirely necessary. At 6000 feet of elevation, you have about a two-pound difference in pressure compared to sea level--less than what it takes to blow up a balloon.

On my L41 it's down inside the handle. Look there.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I tend to think that the board manufacturer probably tested it a bunch and didn't install a vent for a specific reason.  So I wouldn't install one.
