Wing sizing - low vs high aspect
« on: May 12, 2020, 10:05:36 AM »
Anyone know if you’d want to size your wing differently when going from low aspect to high aspect?  Wish I could find specs/dimensions for Gofoil’s GL wings but they’re no where to be found. ::)

I hear that Lift will be releasing their high aspect line very soon. They have various sizes available but the pic I saw stated that they’re all 37” wing span! :o

I’ve been wanting to try a high aspect wing. Currently have a 1600 Armstrong but have heard no rumors about them. Gofoil seems too much of a pain...wings hard to find and I’d have to buy all the other parts. Local Lift dealer is cool and I’ve bought a bunch of things from him in the past so that route seems much easier.

If you are already riding the armstrong 1600, the 1550 is their high aspect wing and it has been around for a while and some places have them in stock.

I've seen some R&D posts from Armstrong showing high aspect wings.  I don't think Armie will come out with one unless it vastly improves over the 1550 or provides some other benefit.

He's all about making wings that are rider friendly and that he enjoys himself.  If he doesn't like a characteristic about a wing, it probably never makes it to production.

In general, you can use less surface area as the aspect ratio increases.

I also have Armstrong and share your desire to try a high aspect wing.  The 1550 is designed to be a fast wing but is not really high aspect (AR 4.1 vs 3.8 for the 1600).  I suspect he will come out with much higher AR wings soon, similar to the Axis 1010 (AR around 7??)  It is a deficiency in the Armstrong line, in my opinion.

Well, I sure hope something comes of it soon! ;D

I was able to demo the 1550 wing for a few weeks. Unfortunately, only had one day with decent waves and a bunch of crappy small days. Nothing epic for surf, that’s for sure, but a good representation of what I usually go out in.

Believe me, I wanted to like it but I honestly didn’t notice too much of a difference compared to my 1600. It turned a little better (felt a little looser) but also a little less forgiving. Slightly less stable and I didn’t think it was much faster. I have the old style tail and a 60cm fuselage.

I had the 1550 for a while with the regular Unitail before the HS tail arrived.  I remember liking the 1550 a bunch more when paired with the tail that's designed to go with it.  Felt like the air break was removed.

VB_foil, does the HS tail just loosen things up or smaller thus less drag and then faster?

The HS Tail gives the 1550 another gear.  Just feels like it slips through the water better.  Better pumping, better turning.

Sky Rama said in a Facebook group that an Armstrong HA wing ‘is in the works’. He rides for Armstrong.

Man, you’re torturing me! ;D What fuselage are you using?  And is the HS tail stock or cut?

Edit...and what kind of conditions are you normally seeing?

Which Facebook group did you see this in?  I heard it’s going to be a large wing, in between the 1600 and 2400.

High aspect, between 1600 and 2400 would be perfect.  I have not seen anything online yet.
