Learning, 9 sessions in.  Foiling is both directions with "enough" wind but a big slap down yesterday in winds too light for my experience level.  Was able to get front half of board off water with vigorous wing pumping a couple of times but just could not get the board pumps in at right time to pop up.  When I am pumping the wing hard, I just don't seem to be able to get any board pumps in.  The natural move seems to be to coordinate unweighting my legs at same time as pulling wing down....it that correct?  Any input appreciated, as usual.

Just as a side note. If you are using an Fone with a harness. I was underpowered on my 4.2 wing , a Kalama 6’6” foil board and an Axis 1020/500. I was pumping like a madman trying to get up. As I got the board pumping matching the rhythm of my wing, my Fone rope harness l caught me right in the eye. I saw a flash and then my upper eyelid swelled up. Kept winging but it still hurts a few days later!

The technique I use for light winds is pull in the rear hand to your hip and at the same time front foot should be coming up as you're pushing your rear foot down compressing the tail of the foil. It'll scoot the board forward and eventually onto foil. A steady constant motion is better than a rigorous erratic motion. You just need to get to lifting speed and then you're on foil, a difference of one mph can do the trick.

Glad you are alright!

This same thing has almost happened to me. No fun getting whipped in the face by the harness line (or accidentally hooking in)!  Next time I'm underpowered and trying to get on foil, I'm going to try tucking the harness line in with with my rear hand hold, taking up the slack.
I’m a 5’9” 65kg rider:

Boards:
   4' 27L Armstrong FG Wing/Surf
   4’5” 34L Armstrong FG Wing/Surf
   4'11" 60L Armstrong Wing/Sup

Foils: Armstrong HA525, HS625, HA725, HA925, HS1050, HA1125, HS1250, HA1325
Wings: BRM 2M & 3M, FreeWing Nitro 4M, OR 5M & 7M Glide

Thanks, will try this today.  So, sounds like you recommend pumping wing and board at the same rate (in sync)?

Pumping wing to rhythm of back foot pushing down. I find with my 6 meter I can just hold the wing in at my hip for a few seconds and it gives a constant push.

Super common problem for us noobs.  Am I doing this pumping wrong or is this not enough wind for my fat ass and my gear? Please, I'm looking to be corrected here if I am wrong. In lighter winds I'm finding a couple of big slower pumps on the wing and board to gain speed (I think pulling down on kite, lifting the nose of the board up as you want to think about breaking the board's seal with the sea, lifting the board out of the water by making yourself lighter AND pointing the foil front wing upwards), and as I am rising I give 3-4 small but fast quick pulls down on the kite to get me up and going.  In heavier wind with my 6m, I literally find with my Maliko 280, and me at 200lbs (Well 205 in isolation :o)), I can just lean back with a little more weight further back on the tail and up I go.  Any other ideas? Appreciate it.

It's extremely hard to pump a 280.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Rear hand to the hip is a great way to think a bout it.  I will try that.  Thank you!
