SUP Foil board weight
« on: May 02, 2020, 09:57:32 AM »
So recently I have had a lot of time to stare at my equipment and contemplate how to optimize it.  I am on my second foil sup.  Went from a 7'9 to a 6'6.  The 6'6 has ~125l and weighs 17lbs.  My first one was a lot heavier due to its size.  But was wondering as these boards are now in the 6' range are they all pretty similar weights.

Anyway wanted to see what others' boards weigh.  Don't know if dropping board dimensions would significantly drop the weight.

Thanks, now i am going back to staring at my dry equipment :)

I am staring at my dry equipment too.  I'm on a 5'7" 107L that weighs just a hair under 14lbs.  hot diggety, it is incredibly more nimble than my 120L 18# 7'0"

Has to do with who's glassing what for you.

I have a 6'0"x29x4.75"x116L S-glass that weighed 13.98 lbs new from one glasser, and another 6'0"x28.5"x4.75"x110L carbon that weighed 16.04 lbs new from another (liters are from two different softwares guesstimations).
Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

14 lbs might be the lower limit until we get some graphene boards.  Jeff made me this board.  It was 13 lbs 8 oz when it started.

But with No handle, No pads, No leash plugs.  Then the twin boxes fell out of it.

I re-built it with a Tuttle box, added 1 carbon rail, footstraps, mini footpads, stick on leash plugs and it weighs 15 lbs 6 oz.  It is 6 feet and probably 105 liters.   I am using board wax only.

I am not sure I trust the posted weights by manufactures.  Although they are probably within a pound or 2.

Here is the weight of my 7' 4" L41 X 31".  This was after the 3rd Re-Installation of the Tuttle box.  It has held up since then very impressively.

Shown 17 lbs 9 oz.  125 Liters.  It is ~ 18 lbs 6 oz with the Straps.  I use the SupTheCreek Postal Scale method for weighing boards.  I highly recommend this because you can find out quickly if the board is taking on water.

I am learning there are almost 2 foiling sports:

1) Small waves with light boards pumping around turning and slashing in 4 to 5 foot surf

2) Big wave foiling 8 to 15 feet.  Bombing drops.  Wave ride speeds 21 to 25+ mph.  You need a big board with a heavy nose and a small wing.

This L41 is my Big Wave Foil board.  With a GoFoil 140 I am thinking I can start catching 20 footers+

The 7'4" L-41 is a bit long and heavy to pump around but the nose stays DOWN on big takeoff and doesn't pearl when it hits the water.

Agreed, and "a pound or 2" is way too much leeway when it comes to knowing if you have a pinhole leak in one of your boards or not, and why I recommend that everyone weigh their boards before they ever put them in the water.

EDIT: Should mention that I weigh them as the come from the manufacturer....with deck pad, but no straps or anything else attached to them. Both have two set of boxes in them, one for the standard straight mast foils, and another set for the Angledfoils, and your standard handles. And yes, these are smaller, play around in smaller surf type boards for the most part...I'm not dropping in Maverick sized "bombs" that often (if ever  :o ;D).

Yea I am with Sano.  I am talking small wave boards here.  If it is overhead i am probably not foiling but prone surfing. I guess this is a reasonable range to expect, in the mid teens.  Mine seems like on the upper end especially when compared to Beasho's L41.

Wonder what the production Kalama boards weigh.  Is Lloydliving around, I know he has a couple Kalamas.

I have a 6’ x 28” custom Kalama. I bought it used and sent Dave a pic and asked if he knew how much volume. He guessed about 115 liters. I weighed it on bathroom scale and it weighs about 15 lbs.

My new 6’6” x 28 that I’m building now is about 14 lbs before handle and padding.

I’m hoping for 15-16 lbs. It’s double 6oz e glass on deck and bottom.
