Paddle in Place
« on: April 27, 2020, 08:30:25 AM »
My daughter Ruby suggested she didn't want to surf.  Then someone suggested an adventure paddle.

From Montara, CA to our house.  She was game for that.

My son, Quinn, drove us to Montara and we did the gentle downwinder.  It was only blowing ~ 5 knots.  The start was brutal.

6 to 10 foot faces at dead low tide.  We launched exactly where Frosty taught Jay Moriarity (in the Movie) to learn to read the current.  The current was ripping and I got wiped out going to wrong way around the rocks.  The GoPro 360 caught the action with an extremely steady hand.

A terrible beginning led to a gentle ending our our doorstep nearly 8 miles later.

This was the theory on how it was supposed to happen:

That video really takes you there...

...also as parent of teens, I can relate to your encouraging your daughter to get out back, as in, 'this sucks, but it will be OK in a minute... "  : )

and the long distance shot on the second video was cool too

Tech note: I watched the first video on my iPhone, and the image was an extremely warped fish eye view. On my desktop, all was normal, EXCEPT if you moved the video forward with the time line at the bottom of the screen, the thumbnail that shows the progression along the time line was the same warped fish eye image.

Thanks for the vicarious paddling.  That rock looked like Godzilla rising up to take Tokyo.  Enjoy the surf time with your daughter,  my son lives 500 miles away now and we only get out together once or twice a year.

That's one solid paddling partner you've got there ... seems like she might have suspected she was going to take a bit of a beating getting out, but she still went!!
Be fun to know what she had to say to you once you guys both got outside.  :)

+ a few prone surfboards nobody here cares about :)

Ruby is a trooper.

We went surfing a few days later it was 8 feet and she said "Did you see me get pounded on my first wave?"  I hadn't.  "It was a terrible beating but because I nearly died the other day today's beating wasn't actually that bad."

Here was a quick clip of her when she finally got out.  Still smiling.
