DJ's why to wear a leash video keeps on giving..
« on: April 14, 2020, 10:14:57 AM »
It's resurfaced in the latest SUP Connect article....

DJ once again teaches us what not to do:)

https://www.supconnect.com/opinion/a-perfect-example-of-why-paddle-boarders-must-always-wear-a-leash

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Maybe I’m imagining it, but didn’t DJ have another written version of this? Or maybe it was of another incident? If I remember correctly he lost his board and was clinging to buoy for quite a while until help arrived. Might have been somewhere around the San Francisco area? It was quite a harrowing experience (quite literally life and death) and made a very good and educational read.

Maybe someone with a better memory can fill in the blanks on this.
Infinity Blackfish 12’ 6” x 23”
ONE SUP Evo 12’ 6” x 24”
Infinity Whiplash 12' 6" x 24 1/2"
ONE SUP Evo 12’ 6” x 26”
Bark Competitor 12’ 6” x 29”
Red Paddle Explorer (Inflatable) 13' 2" x 30
Starboard Airline (Inflatable) 12’ 6” x 27

Yes, I remember that story.  It must have been back in '08 or '09, maybe '10.  As you said, he swam to a buoy and had to flag down a boat.  It was almost his undoing, because it was cold and late in the day.  San Francisco does not ring a bell, I think it was in Oz.  Too far from shore to swim...  Very bad situation.  I think his leash broke and he was solo that day.  Windy, overcast and cold, full wetsuit.

I remember searching the zone for it when this one resurfaced years ago.  The zone is an amazing repository for the old days.  Everything is still here.  Unless maybe a member gets banished I suppose...

DJ used to post a lot, is he doing ok?  I've not been around much lately.  He was a RN wasn't he? Melbourne I think...  Real big Naish fan.  I hope he's doing ok with this latest virus.

Hi LPB,

DJ is a winger and he looks like he is very healthy and still as stoked as ever.

He had two episodes.
The way I remember I think the buoy one was first (just blown away reading that story.....wow, lucky dude)  then there was one when he realized after just a little while out (with a friend just learning first dw??) he didn't have his leash on.....kept going.....everything was good till it wasn't.
Took a lot of balls and humility to come in and post about it after having been through the nightmare before, knowing better, and what can happen.
It's a good thing those stories still keep popping up.
when that paddle gets away......

That POV camera work is great.

Also, funny how 5 years ago the goal was to catch those bumps... now... to fly over them...

The rest of DJ's no leash adventure:

In the old days, I lost a couple of kiteboards when they began to windmill. (a leash was considered a high-powered rubberband) Try finding a small, dark-colored board in the ocean!  At least I had a tow back to shore.  That could get sketchy; most kiters I saw never wore any sort of PFD.
