Teenager wanting to Prone Foil
« on: April 10, 2020, 07:59:14 PM »
14 year old wants to learn to prone foil.
Would a jimmy Lewis Super Fly  with Go Pro Foil be something a novice with good athletic skills could learn on?

I would think for prone paddling, one would want something narrower.

Most of the Maui kids that prone foil are on boards that look like tea trays. They can start on something bigger, but the tiny boards get their feet in the right position every time they pop up (no choice) and pump much easier.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

When I bought my prone setup the WCFC guys told me. You can buy a bigger board and then quickly want a new board. Or you can buy a small board first and it'll take a couple sessions longer but you won't outgrow it. I've had my board for 2 years now so I think their advice is solid.

I ride a 4'8" btw. So I didn't go to a tiny board immediately. Just a small board.

Dave is not a big guy.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

What is your surfing background/level, your size/weight ?

Usually (regarding your profil) :

- board : 4'6 to 5'5 at least 32L
- foil : depends on how much money you want to spend. I guess there is a lot of used foil in the market right now.

I would look for a combo, ask in the forum before you buy so you won't make a mistake.

I misread the OP.  Yes, the JL Superfly would be a great board but I would look for a used board on the bigger side to start with.  The size will depend on ability.

https://amundsonfoil.com/ has a sale going on right now. I think naish and adventure sports in Florida also had sales to clear 2019 inventory.

Gofoil is full carbon. You can put new wings on them which are widely available.

Neil pryde is aluminum. You can put new wings on them which are in very short supply even before Covid-19.

The Neil pryde is supposed to be a very good foil to learn on. If you’re buying new I’d say the price difference is worth it’ll go Neil pryde.  If you’re buying used you can find good deals on full carbon setups like gofoil.

I’m 5’7” and 185 lbs...and old. :o I have a 5’8” Superfly but have only tried it a couple of times...waiting for summer. Used to longboard many years ago, never surfed on a shortboard. Learned to foil on a standup. If I can just get to my feet with them in the general location, I’m good. ;D

What I’ve learned so far is it’s a good idea to mount the foil all the way in the back. For me and this board, the volume is good but if I had to do it again, I’d probably look for a shorter board...maybe 5’2” to 5’4” but with about 50 liters of volume. I find when paddling for a wave, I’ll be lying on the board quite a bit forward and I have to try and keep my weight back so the nose doesn’t dig in. I’m not sure if it’s just me, or the board in relation to my weight/height, but I feel I don’t need 5’8” of board, I do need the volume, and it might be easier if there was more volume up front.
