Sunova Driftwood - Build project
« on: March 31, 2020, 09:51:41 AM »
This board has been a year in the making. Mixing features from 5 different boards including my own custom shape which served me really well until few days ago when I buckled it in rough surf after a good ocean run.
So many moving parts to a shape it is apparent why many shapers like to stick with their own shapes, it could be emotionally draining. I once had a shaper quit on me because he was so stressed out getting it right, can't blame him.
Thankfully, programs like shape3D X probably takes 70% out of the guesswork when giving it to someone else to build, the rest of it I attribute to the build itself. Unfortunately the learning curve for the right build is just as steep as shaping it if not more and I don't think there's an App for that :o

With that in mind, big shoutout to Tino and Sunova for making it so easy and affordable to work with them while they are taking on a custom shape. Tino based the pricing on the Sunova Search since this shape dimensions is between the search 12 and the 14 plus 10% extra they charge for custom. I then upgraded from TR3 to XXX construction but keeping the Paulownia wood VS Balsa making the rails carbon/wood sandwich and adding solid wood Nose/Tail blocks which they usually don't include on SUPs.

This board is my Downwind/Outer bar surf board for Long Island, NY conditions. Here we go

That's F'n awsome. Why 13 ft ?
I built a board that is a similar shape, looks similar to me but I'm sure it's very different but 11ft. With the intention of making a bigger one.
Are they grooves in the nose? If so what for.
Please keep the pics coming.

Thx Creek. I'll keep feeding pics into this thread as soon as they become available from Tino.

Tarquin, I have an 11.11, 13 14 and 15 foot versions of this board. Based on the comparisons I made with all the other version along with assessing our local conditions I thought the 13' should work best.
It fits better than the longer versions in the short period bumps and it will be easier to surf than my previous 15'. As for the grooves, they do help releasing the nose when digging into a bump. I adopted it from a fellow zoner supuk.

I guess the grooves break the water flow when. Interesting.

Beautiful bottom shape, eh?  The other cool part -even tho' a zillion miles away- you are still 'dealing direct' as you would with a local shaper/finisher. Cool.

Beautiful indeed. And yes, Sunova is most easy to deal with and very responsive by far. Even though zillion miles away.

Well the Paulonia looks so nice that you don't really need the yellow.....I have been really enjoying my Sunova Allround during teh winter. I am just starting to switch back to yellow.
