Alternate high density foam
« on: March 14, 2020, 09:13:56 AM »
Went to the local foam supply and saw these. I will get pricing next week but for fins and foil boxes seems like a good idea.

Anyone have info on these? If it's cheaper than Divinycel I might buy a sheet if anyone wants a few blocks. Comes in 1" to 2" thicknesses. I'm also considering it for stringers with a longboard box set in for foils.

CB,  ' know anything about 'construction' or 'house' foam?  My local shaper of 35yrs, said a number of FL shapers are using this.  It is was just in passing so I don't know if for blanks or reinforcing...  Thanks.   Jim

...I will see him fairly soon, so I will get more info also.

ED, I finally caught him..  He calls it 'Carpenter' foam.  I may see him tomorrow. I'll snag a piece and photograph it.

Ok, so not too bad. Especially if a few of us want some.

1” thick 4’x8” sheet is $116.

1 1/2” 4’x8’ sheet is $175.

If anyone’s interested I could buy a sheet and ship pieces out (after this health mess calms down.)

For those that use it, how’s this compare to divinycell?

I need to measure but maybe 1 1/4” is best for fin box inserts?

I’m planning to use some pieces to connect my box inserts to the deck. I don’t have a lot so I’ll likely just do 2 pieces, one at the front and one at the back. But once I have a sheet I’ll make a 4” thick block to connect and spread the load I think.

I've heard it called 'Tow-In' foam. Strong, heavy and more white. It's Polyurethane. Divinycell is lighter, stronger, kinda brownish and Mo money. It's a Closed Cell PVC. I've stacked and glued multiple 1/2" pieces together to make as thick of a piece as I needed. There are other brands, colors and much higher densities of PVC foam.

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Five-pound vinyl isn't a lot more expensive. I've considered making a foil board from mostly PVC. Just a little EPS in the non-load areas. I did a model level glue up and loved the way it shaped. It would be awesome on a CNC.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Marco is using 6 pound inserts on their foil blanks... " We use a 6lb. high density foam and cut it into a puck shape that is 7"x 14" with routed edges.

The insert is designed to accommodate a tuttle box and your standard longboard box." I guess the rest of the board is 1.5 EPS? Or your choice.

Ok so divinycell is 3x the price of this stuff.

And yes, that Marko blank is exactly the idea.

But at this price you could make the whole standing area (maybe 12” 36”) out of 6 lb rigid foam and then eps the rest.

At my weight, Charlie has advised me to just use the cassette and dual 6oz glass and skip the carbon altogether. I’ll probably put a patch over the box. That’s what Infinity does it looks like and it works fine.

This stuff is priced right and should let us make some rock solid bottom to deck box mounts.

I generally look at stuff like this in relation to total cost. 3X the price for a better foam is still trivial in terms of the total cost, even if you ignore labor. I spend about as much on vacuum bagging consumables as I do on foam.
