Recommendation for locking straps
« on: February 25, 2020, 01:27:33 PM »
Doing a camping trip to Florida with my SUP and was thinking about getting some locking straps to protect my SUP when not at the campground. I know nothing is theft-proof, but thought about using the locking straps to secure my SUP to my camper to secure it some. Anyone try the canulock or thule locking straps or have any other suggestions?

Thanks

I have a pair of locking Kanulocks and they will deter the "spur of the moment opportunistic thief". They are very hard to cut through because of the two stainless steel cables inside the strap webbing. Trying to cut through the straps with a very sharp knife or a bolt cutter will take lots of time and opportune thieves aren't the types to wait around for any length of time in my opinion.

They are ways to cut through the Kanulock straps quickly, but it takes a special tool to do so and in my opinion, that tool is a portable battery operated dremel tool. But this device will also make noise and thieves don't like noise giving themselves away and alerting someone.

Kanulocks, but their keys are rubbish. But they still get my vote.

Kanulocks works. Another useful and more sophisticated solution is https://lockrackus.com/collections/sup

I recommend Yakima Ripcords.  Perhaps a little more expensive than other options (unless you hit a sale) but they've lasted longer than any other brand I've tried.  Most straps last for about a year of daily use.  These do a bit better than that.  Since you'll only be using them for trips here or there, probably OK with something else.

Just make sure to always get the longest version of whatever brand you choose (~13ft).  That'll give you enough to easily tie down 2 SUPS.

Agreed about the locks. One of mine snapped so I had a locksmith make metal copies of the other key. I've had the same straps since 2012 and they're still going strong.

Kanu locks are very good straps. I have two sets and rarely use anything else for strapping down my boards because the ease of use and durability is so good. You just don't torque them down hard to prevent damage to your board and you are good to go. I noticed a break in period and the straps then don't loosen as easily the more you use them imo. The keys are too soft, and that's the biggest complaint most people have. The steel cords will sometimes end up poking out the end, and I suggest taking a lighter to the ends as soon as you get them to melt the ends shut completely. An industrial sewer could work in really closing off the ends of the straps as well.

Bulky mentioned most straps are pretty much done after one year of use, but my first set of Kanu locks are still in pretty good condition after nearly 10 years of use. If you aren't smacking the buckles on concrete, and storing them out of the elements, the straps will last for years. The material on the straps is pretty bomber, and the buckles work well, and keep biting year after year.

One super simple solution if you have a SIC style handle or similar or liftsup handle is to run a cable with loops at both ends through and pop up a headrest and loop is on and pop it back inside the car.  I use this technique in Florida and Florida man hasn’t stole my board yet.
