Anyone gonna give the new Gong wing a dings a try?
« on: February 24, 2020, 01:35:14 AM »
Just to add to endless stream of wing a ding choices, the Gong Pulse and Superpower should finally be out in just a few days.  Anyone planning to buy?  For all the gushing over the F-One’s, I just can’t bring myself to plunk down $1,000 for a 6m. Don’t have much interest in the Superpower but the 6m Pulse has me very interested. It should be about $620 shipped to the US. Since this is Patrice’s 3rd iteration I figure it should be getting pretty decent. Just curious if anyone else is gonna bite.

I've a 4 and 5m Plus and am tempted by a 6m Superpower for the summer, but interested to hear feedback first especially vs a 7m Pulse.
I'm 5'10", 66kg riding:
Swift Foil Boards custom 4'10 x 19.5" 35L
Gong Lethal 4'6 65L
Axis ART 799, 899, 1099, HPS 880 US & CS Adv fuse, 85cm mast
Gong Fluid L-S, XXL-S on 85cm and 65cm mast
Takuma RS 5.1, 4.3, 3.5

The Gong Superpower 9 is tempting me. I already have a Swing 4,5,&6 and feel really good about those wings, however, at a certain light breeze even the Swing 6 won't go.

There are going to be a certain amount of days each year where the Superpower 9 would probably be the difference between going and having a great time or not going at all.

I would love to read a review of the Superpower wings.

Solent, can you expound a bit about your 5 m plus?

Wasn't clear in my first message, but it's the 4m Plus and 5m Plus that I have, and only have 10 sessions or so total under my belt almost all on the 4m as it's been booming windy.

I can only compare them to each other really.

The 4 has surprised me in a couple of ways:

1) Quite a bit smaller diameter of inflated leading edge vs the 5, which means I've been inflating to 11ish psi (on my gauge, is it accurate???) which is over the recommended max of 10, in order to get the rigidity and stability in really gusty conditions.
2) Having said that, I've had it out gusting 30+ knots (picked up!) , and although a bit of a battle, was manageable and still fun (which wouldn't have been the case windsurfing without a kit change)

Haven't had enough time on the 5 to really find out it's performance envelope but initial impressions are that it's similar in character to the 4.

Reason for looking at the 6 Superpower is where I foil is pretty tidal and I wouldn't want to risk getting caught out on a marginal day if the 5 was the biggest I had. Also want to stay away from massive foils if possible as I like the agility.

EDIT - just checked published wind range for the 4m Plus which is 17-32 knots at my weight which is about right in my experience. The 5m Plus is 11-22, so assuming that's accurate too, then I'd want a little more bottom end, hence the 6.

Interesting, since the 9m SP will still be ready for shipping in a couple of days. Patrice seems to like putting his new stuff onto the website very early for pre-sale orders, yet not allowing any gear to go out early for independent reviews. Of course plenty of videos of the new wings (or boards/foils for that matter) with his own “team” riders. Oh well. Guess we’ll get some independent feedback soon enough

Thanks for that Solent. On the fence between a 4 or 5 pulse (not plus, but looks identical) to start with.
Concerned they will put off the release date like they just did with the lemon boards, assuming it’s virus related. I’d rather miss out than pre-order.

Thought I was immune from virus concerns here on Fuerteventura but they just locked down a hotel on Tenerife with 1000 guests...

The 6 superpower are shipping also for those who bought before that batch sold out. it well be nice to get some reviews.

I'm really interested in how that 6 Superpower stack up against the lighter F-one 6 Swing in very low wind conditions?

Last year there was a blurb about a coming new fabric that was just as strong but much lighter and would be coming on the "next wave" of new sails/wings/kites. Didn't state if it meant 2020 or when.
Is this old news and common with everything new coming out?
 Still in the "coming" stage?
The weight savings was significant.

No idea what commercial agreements there in place but it could be a while before it's used throughout the industry...

Can anyone offer an opinion on this wind range table for the Pulse? The 4 and 5 are what I’m interested in. At 90Kg I’m just finding it a little hard to believe the minimum I’ld need for a 4 is 21 knots (1900ish cm2 foil). Am I reading that right?!

Having been in touch with Gong about wind ranges on their Plus wings they would say that those quoted aren't fixed in stone as so much depends on the ability of the rider...

For learning appears more is better, thus ill likely get the 5 first.

I see they moved the date back to 3/3 on whatever was coming in previously on 2/28.
