Futures Center Box Adapter

Took a "chance" on this design, and so far, so good...

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:477221

Most printer places can go straight to the file URL and print it. You can also download the file and print it. Works perfect. The local library here does it for free, just takes two weeks. The clean up is pretty easy, with the webbing in the center and holes pulling out pretty easy. Cleaned it up by just scraping with a small screw driver. The pin hole is perfectly sized to push in a pin from one of those cheap Chinese 9" fins that come "free" with many boards. The set screw hole is sized perfectly for the screw to self-tap, but I heat the screw with a lighter first. Fin fit is pretty snug. The sides are really thin to be able to fit between the box and fin, so depending on the plastic, it might crack horizontally if you don't sand down the fin. This one did, but it's not a big deal, as the "strap" is in tension and not affected. Fits really snug in the box, and long enough to push all the way back with the hold-down screw not being directly over the tab slot. So far, works great. The only beef I have is that the "solid" sections are hollowed with supports, probably to save material, and potentially weak. Time will tell.

Nice work man. That “hollow part” is a variable called infill. You can edit the part to make it more solid. But yes, it’s a balance between durability and print time and materials.

Nice. I work in a pretty technical field, and it's hard enough to just keep pace with what I do... I've come to a place where I simply refuse to fill my mind with any more useless (to me) information. When it came to 3D printing, I drew a line and said "nope, I'll leave it to the pros" LOL.  I now found a use for it (surfing related), so might just take the deep dive. Thanks for the info. Will try to implement it in the next go around.

I’m in a similar position. Trying to decide between 3D printing and welding for this year. 😉

Not sure. The local library here did it for free. I think they have some kind of pricing and ordering on their website.

It's kind of a pain to clean it all out, but once done, I pushed the pin out of one of those 9" plastic fins I seem to have a hundred of, and in pushed right into the adapter. Then heated a screw with a lighter, and it threaded easily into the hole for the hold down. Fin was a little tight going into the adapter, but snug is better. It cracked lengthwise in the thin area along the side of the fin, but it doesn't matter, as that "strap" is in tension when installed. Also snug in the US box, but again, snug is better. Been surfing it a lot and no problems.

...and then that happened  :'(  At least I didn't lose the fin. Lasted three 3-4 hour sessions.

As I suspected, the part was weak due to being hollow. Will try again with the infill. If that fails, I'll probably machine one in Ti-6AL-4V  :)
