Bocas is considered the 'wild side' (Darien is the 'very' wild section.) with a sketchy history of miscreants and drugs. My wife was born/raised in the Zone; her favorite area is around Boquete, but two young Dutch women were killed there in 2014. As prejudicial as that sounds, I would guess you may still be safer there than similarly exposed* in the States.
*unknowingly entering sketchy areas
